The Rickenmodder Club

I did a thread search.. my screen name didn't come up, so here I am....

Don't necessarily need a number..but...

On my '72...I removed that useless false-horseshoe pup cover ...much easier to play.

I was so dismayed at the difference between bridge and neck pups on my 72 4001s burgndy-glo..I had the cap clipped..instantly both pups were equal. Lost the ultra high treble in bridge pup.

Shortly after I bought a used '78 autumn-glo, my 72 Ric was stolen in mid 1980's...

Because she knew I loved JACO and BARTOLINI..My wife gifted me with a set of Bartolini Jazz pups following Christmas. Wife's dad installed them for me on the 78.

I had Greg Curbow replace stock Grovers with Schaller tuners on 78.

In 1997, after decades of using nothing but Rotosound Swing bass 66 rounds..I replaced the rounds with La Bella flats..haven't changed them since.

Somehow..I have a bad electrical problem. Pups not the issue..some anomoly in the wiring/ electronics.. so soon I will replace the whole harnesss and begin using my 78 again.

I discovered that 70s 4001 basses sound really good with the stock pickups and all 250k ohm pots and no .0047 capacitor. They still have the treble bite but they are warmer and the harshness is gone. And you can still put in a neck toaster as well.

I had a 73 that I rewired like that and without the 500k ohm tone pots it was sweet. The I rewired a 75 the same way except it also got a neck toaster. That bass had killer tone.

Huh...how did i miss this thread the first time around? I bought the Laredo 4002v57 from Coolhandjjl, and further modded it by swapping the gold hardware from my Maple Cii. (Which was a big improvement in the looks of both basses, imo) i also bought vintage black knobs from RIC,as well as black switch cover, and gold pg screws. And while the Laredo still has the factory nut,i replaced the Cii's with a deer antler nut.The Cii had already been modded by changing the electronics to VVT,500k ohm pots, with push-pull coil taps. Ii replaced the gold lucite trc on the laredo with one that Dane made from the same material as the pickguard, and put the other gold trc on the Cii.
My 74 4000 has an aluminum hipshot bridge, hipshot tuning keys, new beefier frets, and a deer antler nut. It also has copper tape shielding, but i don't believe it made any difference. I also replaced the rusted pg screws with black ones. I am not contemplating buying any other Ric basses anytime soon,as these 3 really cover my needs well.

Ric5...

Yeah.. my 78 was nothing like my 72 in looks, tone or feel..so I had no issues with modding it.

Funny..Although I NEVER used it..I kept the acrylic tug bar on my 72.
I could see Chris Squire using a tub bar; playing in a country band. I thought that if I removed it, I would have (2) screw holes..just as useless..never in my way, so I left it alone.

Ironically after becoming an admirer of Jaco..I remained a Squire clone; listening to Wishbone Ash and Kansas..while 3 nights a week in 1980's...I PLAYED IN A COUNTRY BAND...only I used a pick...

instead of 1-5..1-5..all night long, I played arpeggios and scales leading up to changes..thinking ..."what would Lee Sklar do?"..lol.....I mean I never gleaned a cent playing rock covers , jazz or prog. I instantly equalled my take home pay for 40 hour week in 12 hours at night..playing country and oldies..sighs.. those were the days..with my 72 Rick..sighs..

One day I will find my 72...somewhere.. Somebody got a really great bass....hope they are taking loving care of it as I DID..

On the topic of Rickenbackers; anyway ever added an active pre-amp to a Rickenbacker? I may soon have an extra Aguilar OBP-3 that I'm thinking of adding to my Rickenbacker, because why not. I'll probably have to cut in some extra cavity space which I'm fine with, I'm just wondering how it'll be wired up. I'd rather have it tied to both the neck and bridge but since the OBP-3 all comes out of this little black box, I don't know how to really fit that in. For instance there is a Bass, Mid, Treble, Volume (on/off switch) knob , but I don't know what to do with the OBP-3's volume knob. Anyone know?

I'm not qualified to become a member of this group because I don't actually have a Ric, but since I only play sub-short scale basses and when I saw a reissue 325 at Guitar Center, I got the idea to convert it to a bass. Here's my mockup. If I ever do it, I'll ask for membership.
