The Sadowsky/Warmoth connection?

I'm a 21 year old student and for a long time, I had heard about Sadowsky basses and wondered what the big deal was. So, I waited for an opportune time and took a trip down to the shop in Brooklyn and had a chance to try NYC basses and Metro basses side by side. Thats when I realized where the money went. Feel, craft and (the most subjective of all) tone was perfect for what I was looking for. I wound up putting a deposit on an NYC bass that should be completed this month. Yeah, it was over $3000.00 and that is a lot of money, however I have a job and was more than willing to throw cash on the side to save up during the 5/6 month building window. Its not that hard to save for something you really want, you just have to make small sacrifices.

I've only had experience with one Sadowsky that passed through my hands shortly. It was a natural ash Metro MS5. It was meticulously crafted and near perfect to every detail. The fretwork was perfect, the finish was perfect, the hardware was perfect, etc. Of course, I mean perfect in the sense as in as perfect as humanly possible. The great attention to detail produces a flawless jazz or p copy. While I find the metro's to yield quality woods, though very plain looking woods, the people's time and effort that went into creating such a flawlessly crafted instrument is where the price tag lies IMO.

While I did think it was a very nice sounding bass, the cost of the instrument outweighed the tone for me. I already have a MIJ '75 Reissue jazz that I am very fond of, and I simply didn't think I was gaining anything that I didn't already have covered with my Fender and my MTD. I also wasn't completely enamoured with the playability of the bass, but that is purely personal, and I am sure with more time I would have gotten used to it.

So I sold it, and I don't regret it. I do gas a bit for a Sadowsky here and there, but I don't think I will get one any time soon.

When some people drink good wine, they say they can't taste the difference and its not worth £100 per bottle. When some people drive a Porsche they can't see why it costs more than a BMW. Just because you don't feel / see / hear the difference doesn't mean there isn't one or that someone else won't. It just means that the thing is not for you and, luckily, you probably saved yourself some cash

Those same people will put ketchup on a $40 steak! LOL

For some reason these Sadowsky posts always seem to bring about high emotions on both sides...it'll start out being a nice discussion, and next thing you know you're quoting Anchorman:

I think Mike's comment was based on past experience. The OP asked a very reasonable question that a few of us answered. However, there are then always the few that implicitly suggest that anyone who would pay the price for a 'parts bass' like a Sadowsky is an idiot (note that I said 'implicitly'). Since no-one likes to be called an idiot, it can sometimes get a little heated.

However, if you look at the previous Sadowsky threads that really got heated, it's usually the same three or four guys yelling at each other:rollno:

It is perfectly acceptable to ask about the manufacturing process of basses or any gear and decide if those issues are important enough to move the price/value equation to the negative.

Of course not.

The problem usually happens when one or more Sadowsky owners decides to get thin-skinned when someone attacks the brand, especially from a misinformed position.

Personally, it'd be nice to see this thread just end peacefully, because really, the question has been answered, it's been pretty cool so far, and of course, it's a well beaten horse. :)

If they didn't hold their value so well, I'd be inclined to think that they are overpriced too. The fact is that the market seems to indicate that they are not only worthy of the new price, but also worthy of the used prices too.

I have tried a couple out and thought they were simply dreamy. That said, I cannot justify market value whether it be new or used... regardless.

If it were my full-time job, I'm sure that I'd have one (or more). Until then (hopefully someday), I'll just have steer clear of them so as to not drool on them.
