Nice and very well done but it's not really a short scale six string bass; the 1962 Burns short scale six string bass that I have is standard guitar scale, now that really is a short scale six string bass.

I strung my bass last week end and I took a picture but unfortunately is not a good one...
I still need to drill some holes for the volume and tone knobs... Then I need to complete the wiring.
This is how my project looks so far:

i think im in the right place. i discovered this bass about 13 years ago. it belonged to my buddy's grandfather. i've recently got into the restoration/re-finishing hobby. so he gave the bass to me to have repainted, restored, etc. but once i got the pot codes which indicated a year 1958, plus it's all original, i said nope, i ain't touching it. just going to clean it. and for something as old as it is, it sounds AWESOME!! i can't wait to put some new strings on it. note how clean the inside is.
my question is, what gauge strings do i use for this? i.e., bass strings. will fender VI strings fit? i have the option of going baritone guitar, or "tic-toc" bass. at least i think so because the strings that were on it we all roundwound. any help on this would be appreciated. here are the pics:

I had a newer reissue of that bass. Fender Bass VI strings are too long, but these will fit:

You can also use baritone strings. These should fit:

As a bass it would be tuned E - e an octave below guitar, as a baritone it would be tuned A-a or B - b, in between guitar and bass.

Yesterday I completed my Fender VI replica
My brother completed the wiring and it sounded great. The only thing I need to fix is something related to the Bridge pickup Im getting some noise from that pickup
Its been a long wait since 1991 when I discovered that Robert Smith played a Fender VI on the Disintegration album
I can wait to go back home and play my new bass!

Played this yesterday....it's on sale,down 600 from what it was.Played like a dream.I actually could say it is arguably the best one I've played in a good while at least.It would be my ultimate guitar if it had the B50 that the Gretsch Jet Baritone has.Need to get some scratchcards to get me some quick money to pull the trigger on this one....

Really nice looking baritone guitar there, but it's 27.75" scale and it's tuned B - B. So it's a slightly different beast than the 30" types mentioned here. Now if you want to play like Duane Eddy then here you go...

It does have a very heavy low-end crunch to it alright.It has shot up on my GAS Hitlist for sure.
Yep -- a nice bari will really make a good country or rockabilly tune come alive. A lot of alt-rock people like Wilco have made interesting use out of them too. I suppose there's really no limit to where you could use one.
Does anybody know the correct metric Allen wrench size to adjust the bridge height on an MIJ Bass VI? I used to know but I have since forgotten.

My little brother gave it to me. I don't really know what to do with it, so I lend it out to my geetar playin' buds.
Strings are too little and spacing too tight for me cloddish fingers. Don't use picks (Keep twirling in my fingers).
I tune it E-A-D-G-C-F. Would like to tune it B-E-A-D-G-C, but can't find a set. Maybe go the $ingle$ route.

Yeah -- don't do it. Short scale 6-string basses won't be able to handle that type of string width and tension. In fact the Jerry Jones usually uses an .084 for the low E as opposed to the Fender which uses a .095. It is, however, a very fine instrument as best used for twangy leads a la "Witchita Lineman" by Glen Campbell. I imagine it would also sound great in a lot of alt/indie contexts. Or also maybe for Spaghetti Westerns....
