Several years ago, my wife took me to a party thrown by people whose common thread was the recording/audio forum/website associated with an iconic Chicago recording engineer/studio. So it was a lot of middle age indie rock/recording nerds. I didn’t really know anyone, but I overheard dudes in the kitchen talking about a “Floyd Rose Sustainer guitar” and blagged my way into the conversation, because I can geargeek out with the best of ‘em.
There’s a dude who looks like a mini-me version of the actor Kevin James, aka “The King of Queens”, talking about how much he loves aluminum-necked guitars and 12 string basses (i.e. a 4 string bass, where each string has an additional 2 octave-up strings), but his options are non-existent because he’s left handed. He then pulls out his brand new iPhone to show off pics of his custom-made left handed 12 string aluminum bass, which looks like the Silver Surfer and probably cost ~$10k (at the time, I was touring internationally with a $400 MIJ Fender). He talks about how great it sounds splitting the output, running the neck pickup into a bass amp and the bridge pickup into a guitar amp. #chrissquire
I’m starting to wonder to myself if he’s some Chicago post-rock superstar bassist (I know what all the guys in Tortoise look like, but maybe he’s in Dianogah or Russian Circles or something?) After he told me all about his super bass, I jokingly asked, “So, what’s your choir director think?” AKA what the hell is your gig? Dude proceeds to tell the story of the only gig he’s ever played, which was an open mic with some friends that he sabotaged via his own lack of professionalism (some combination of alcohol and stage volume). Well, alright then.
Epilogue: dude was busted for being a pedo a few years later.
