My phone's camera is a little off - IRL, it has a more brownish hue. Ibanez really did a great job (as usual) on the finish. Shame they don't make these anymore - today's equivalent & price point is the SR605. The Big Singles are incredible - major improvement (IMHO) over the Bart MK1's that it used to sport. Very powerful tone - punchy, great top end but not brittle.

In between the replies I put a 6 string set in the cart and once imported, taxes paid etc, they're expensive*. IDK really - I guess the sensible argument is the extra coils & wire and all that jazz.
Curious if there is a $60 gap between the 4 & 5 string versions as well?

I've started winding my own pickups on a small scale as experiments as I have some experience in other areas of electronics that translates, and the parts cost isn't that high, even in small quantities. Not complaining as I realise it's a 'you want them, you pay for them' thing and I'm OK with that. I just wish they were cheaper.
I'm not at the point where I can make my own reliably enough yet. A new winder is under development, and a 3D printer will come soon to do the covers. Hobbyist level only for a while.
$182/269/330 so it does scale, but the 16.5mm spacing is custom and adds $40 to a pair which I've added to the prices here.

Today's equivalent would be the SR605 (comes standard w/Nordstrand Big Break pickups). I added the Big Singles sometime after owning the bass for a few years. Nice to see Nordstrand pickups becoming the standard pickup choice in the mid-to-upper models these days.

Well those are their Prestige pickups which do sound awesome, but you can get a used prestige with those pickups for pretty cheap relatively.

Audere will not ship to Australia unfortunately, so I'm now looking at a Bartolini, Nordstrand or John East.
How tight is a tight fit with the John East?

It's really really tight but doable. I had the East in there and switched to the Nordstrand. Outside of the active blend on the East I preferred the Nordstrand. With the East there is no room for switches also.
This is the preamp I put in my 5005
Nordstrand 3B-5b - PREWIRED – 3 band bass preamp with volume (pull passive), blend, tone, push pull frequency selector on mid, and treble/bass stack
East is undoubtedly more flexible and sounds great, but I found the Nordstrand easier to dial in a great tone quickly. Couldn't get a bad sound out of it really.
Can't go wrong with either.
