That's funny. I actually prefer the 2 + 3 headstocks. Not sure why.
Yes, most are 3 + 2, atleast, they used to be. More and more SR basses come with the 2 + 3 heads. No idea why, perhaps Ibanez thought it was time for a change

Basicly the same like I prefer a light coloured exotic wood top (like the new 160xe series has) while other prefer the looks of a darker coloured top (like the 500xe series).Wow... just spent the last two hours reading this topic starting with part 1! Just joined TB yesterday so got a lot of reading to do.
Have wanted an SR for as long as I can remember (been playing bass for 20 years now) and finally pulled the trigger a few days ago. Ordered a new 2012 SR705 Charcoal Brown. Suppose to arrive this Tuesday. Can't wait! I really like my BTB455QM but its starts hurting my back after the second worship service so wanted something a little lighter but still with the Bart's. might swap out the MK1's for the US Bart's but we'll see how they sound first. Have a rehearsal Wednesday night so hoping to get a good feel for how it sounds and plays compared to the BTB455.
Anyone have both a BTB and an SR? Interested in how they compare to one another. Does anyone know what strings they come from the factory with? I usually use DR High Beams on the BTB and have a new set in the box in case I don't like what it has on it out of the box.
Will post some pics of it once it arrives. Also got the Ibanez hard case for it and treated myself to a nice new Mogami cable!
If anyone is handing out numbers... can I get one or do I need to be in actual possession of the bass first? LOL

As far as I know, premium and prestige models come with 2+3 headstocks, and the rest with 3+2, if I'm not mistaken. Correct me if I'm wrong please.
I think the basses came with Elixirs. Sometimes they need to break in a little. I like the Elixirs on my BTB. I have and SRX705 which sounds good with Sunbeams and a SRXX on the new premiums with the nord pickups. Still trying to figure out what I like on that one. The SRs have a smaller more narrow neck while the BTB are wider and flatter. Depending on which model the SRs are lighter. The bolt-on neck sounds a little different to the BTB. I really like the BTB for playing more funky stuff and slapping.

To give a answer on your question about the SR and BTB : Both basses sound very different. BTB basses come with neck through design and 35'' scale since the 400 series.
The SR basses have Bolt on necks (most of them) and 34'' scale. The difference in tone is that Bolt on designs have a more open sound then the neck through ones. Neck through basses are ''1 piece basses''. This gives the sound a good sustain but sort of sounds muted.
This is because the whole bass resonates when you play a note, otherwise then a Bolt on bass. If you wanna know what I mean, check the Fodera website for some sound comparing

My BTB455QM has a bolt on neck. I have seen photos of others that were neck thru so maybe mine is an earlier model?
Possible, another option is that the first neck throughs were a experiment to see the reaction of the people who played it.

My brand new (and first ever) Soundgear arrived today. It's a 2012 SR705 in charcoal brown although the indoor lighting really brings out the red coloring. After playing it for about 15 minutes... I have to say that I like it much better than my BTB455. The narrower neck and shorter scale make it a little easier to play for me. Sounds great too! Already put my strap locks on it since I will be using it this Sunday. It came with Elixir strings which is the first time I have tried them. They seem to have a coating that makes them a little slicker than the DR's I usually use but sound pretty good. Can't wait to try it out on Sunday through the house PA!

I love the Elixirs - they last forever and take a little of the brittleness off of the treble. If you're doing metal or heavy rock you may want the brightness of another kind of string, but if you're going for almost anything else they are super nice. I put them on just about everything these days. One warning, because they are coated, you don't ground to the strings as you normally would. So if you're playing in a building with no ground you may hear a buzz whenever you touch the bridge or something else that goes to ground. I doubt you'll notice it with Bartolinis since they have plastic covers, but I can really tell on the SRXs that have exposed pole pieces.
