What are your thoughts on Kathryn Janeway. Should she have been hailed as a hero upon her return? Or arrested for multiple, very serious violations of Federation laws?

Well firstly I’m not a purist. I’ve never seen TOS apart from a few episodes and a couple of the movies. I came in during TNG (have now seen them all) and peaked on DS9 and Enterprise. (And have watched Discovery & Picard).

Voyager improved a lot when they ditched Kes for Seven.

Janeway I liked on balance. Though she did bend the rules and could be talked around to some dodgy actions more easily that I expected for a Starfleet Captain. At different times they used Chakotay (and others) to argue for the ethical action when she was heading into unethical waters. Not always successfully. “I am the Captain” was used a bit.
At times she suppressed her Starfleet obligations for just doing anything to get them home. Some of the last year of the series suffered by a rush to work out how to close the show off. The future Admiral Janeway wasn’t a good way to finish off. Janeway breaking directives and being a single focus hard arse. Of course she re-centred on her SF ethics after some time with her future self. A little corny.

I'm watching DS9, start to finish. I'm about halfway into Season 2, where they make first mention of The Dominion. Haven't watched any of DS9 since it was new and I’m not sure I finished it. Really enjoying it this time around.

Also watched an episode of TNG yesterday in which there was a casual mention of Troi having an appointment on her calendar with an Ensign Janeway.

Voyager is my favourite series and Janeway my favourite captain. I liked that she was on the reckless side and bent the rules. Janeway + B'Elanna Torres + Seven of Nine was a great lineup.
