My understanding is they aren't that close. Finally was based off the UA circuit IIRC, so in the broadest of senses, we are talking about Fender v. Ampeg sound. Although, that being said, I think you are talking about different flavours of awesome, and they will both do similar things overall to your tone. These pedals may be based off classic circuits, but Nathan makes sure to give everything his own signature Sushi take, so I don't think you can go wrong with either a Finally or GS!
In the most basic terms, from owning both I'd describe the finally as a bit more hifi/slightly more evenly voiced, the GS with the EQ pretty flat sounds a bit more "rounded" and a slightly bigger bottom end, and the the EQ can go from there.
Oh I thought the finally was more transparent like the More but with an xlr out, so far it is the perfect di for my nano board I’m putting together with the HX Stomp, do you think it will be just fine, I’m waiting for the finally V3 to be released and I just want some tube warm for the digital sound of the stomp.
Finally is exactly a UA without the tone stack. It can provide clean through dirty tube tones without eq.
Can't recommend the UA enough. Helps beef up any DI you use as well, paired it with a JDI last night and loved the tone, also sounds good with the Finally, and now that the variable HPF will be included with the V3 you can really sculpt a sound between those two units. I gigged a V1 Finally and a UA for quite a while and it was great
I’ve used a finally. V1 for a long while before switching over to the neptunium. I am actually using my nano+ board right now at church with the stomp and it is wonderful.
If subtle harmonics, the Finally v2 WBIM edition as it has the 12au7 tube. UA and earlier Finally v2 and v1 have a 12ax7 tube and are a bit grittier, but can also be subtle at very low gain.
Mr Sushi is working on Finally v3 now. Should be here soon. It will have the 12au7 tube as well, I think.
If you don't need any EQ, you might want to check out the MORE, or even the Single Slice, for subtle tube harmonics. MORE just makes everything sound better, and that would be my first choice. I'm digging the Single Slice as well, though, and you can a little subtle compression and presence with that one.
Interesting. How do you control the amount of harmonics? There’s no gain control. Do you just use a boost in front of it?
Glad to hear that, I wish I didn’t miss on the neptunium, but the finally v3 when it gets available will be and insta buy no doubt.
The single knob on the MORE is output level, and you can give the signal a boost with it, if you want to. To my ear, MORE supplies a harmonic richness that doesn't get in the way of anything else. I don't know much about how it works, but it really does do what the name says: it gives you more.
Will echo what everyone else said here; the UA you can certainly get subtle harmonics and bypass the EQ circuit; Finally would work great (and you get a DI) but to me MORE is the answer here. Definitely makes everything sound MORE... so to speak. Also not Sushi Box but the SIngular Audio Tubedrve is a great option for what you're looking for.
Great board! At the time Neptunium was available I had no direct need for one and didn’t “just get one anyway”. Now I wish I had because now I do. I’m keeping my eye out for one to pop up in the classifieds. Or, ahem, I’d buy one in a heartbeat if there was a second release! Also would like to try out the Becos comp, but need to finish doing some comparisons with current ones and then move a few along.
The singular audio demo sounds really good. I cannot find any demos of the more on YouTube though. Will keep looking.
