What about all the people who use two compressors?

I’m still trying to decide. It’s tough. The SS is really good. Does just about exactly what I want a compressor to do. Not heavy handed or constraining and has great tone. But, is it better than my Cali76? Man, I don’t know, the Cali is just so damn good.

More testing coming for me. I’m only keeping one and this will be a very tough decision.

I do know that if I didn’t already have other tube pedals (Finally, UA, Khan VTDI), I would probably for sure go with the SS.

Ughhhh, decisions.

For the last two years I’ve gone back and forth with the Collaboration Devices comp and a Cali76; I’ve decided that keeping both around is necessary for when I change my mind. Having options is a good thing and seems like keeping the SS around makes sense

So I set out to do a dirt tone shootout video, and this is what I cam up with.

I am w/you all the way w/the "hear w/the ears, feel w/the body + don't let the eyes get you hypnotized to get to the truth on the bottom line" trip w/bass when it comes to compressors and maybe lots of other device stuff too. it's what life has taught me...

I went through a similar thought process. In the end, if I had to have only 1 comp, the Empress would be it. However, having >1 comp and >1 board is where I happily am. Single Slice isn't a prototypical compressor. It's a tone sweetener with smoothing benefits..... its own good thing.

Oh man, this reminds me how good the black eye sounds. I haven’t been using it with my current band but I just may need to dust that pedal off

Here's my li'l single slice review:

I used it extensively at band practice last weekend. We live pretty far apart so when we manage to get together the usual format is a weekend sleepover jam.....we play for 3 hours Sat afternoon, 1-2 hours Sat eve and another 1.5 hours Sunday morning. I have been experimenting with it solo since then. At first I fell into the trap of thinking I wouldn't keep it because it's not as versatile or quick to dial in as my Empress......but I have come to my senses and will definitely keep this one.

I am very accustomed to the Empress. Thanks to its LEDs, I can dial it in with a different bass without fuss in 15 seconds. I just pluck the loudest notes I will play and set the input gain until the peaks hit -8 and done. The only other control to adjust is the output volume with the remaining knobs staying the same. It provides complete control of the key parameters. The SS took a lot more experimenting to understand. The settings I settled on (in the pic) are for a BEAD Stingray with rounds. To my ear, this box significantly enhances mids, and that's the core of its character. It sounds superb particularly when the rest of the chain has the bass boosted because the added mid punch takes some emphasis off the lows and the overall tone is meaty and balanced. I did not find it diminished the highs at all. It makes my Underground Accelerator sound even better.......I play the UA with bass goosed around 5, mids at 10 and treble at 0......SS definitely adds nice articulation to it.

At the end of that day, to my ear it's a tone sweetener/enhancer that adds clarity and also smooths peaks/ evens the signal out.

Any similarities between the SS and More as far as the tone enhancement?

Yes very much to my ear, but far less subtle and with the benefits of a comp that can smooth & add sustain if desired. When I evaluated it at unity volume, More sounded so subtle to me that I had no genuine use for it so I flipped it. This is a pedal that can make a meaningful tonal difference in a live setting.

Definate similarities for me. Does a similiar tone enhancer but with the compression added too.

My Slampegg arrived a couple weeks ago. Great piece! Im pretty much running EQ at Noon, gain at 10 o'clock, and switches off. Enjoying the sound but wondering if anyone has settings they enjoy most? Running a p bass with flats.

What are everyones's favorite Slampegg settings? Noon seems to be a great B15 sound, does it get into other territory? Thanks!

I usually scoop for bass guitar and cut bass a little and boost treble a little for upright. But yeah the GS sounds good pretty much at any setting imo.

This is awesome. The black eye sounds like the most tube like to me.

When I want heavy, Black Eye II is unbeatable. But admittedly as I listen to them all back-to-back like this, the one that stands out to my ears for flexibility and range is JC Emerald. That thing is special.

I tried to run the amp clean and EQ fairly neutral so the sound wasn't overly colored and you could really hear what the pedals sounded like. I wasn't completely satisfied with just the mic'd sound I was getting, so I also blended in a D.I., which also helps give more of a "raw" sound from the pedal itself. No post-processing or EQ.

For the fellow nerds that enjoy this sort of thing, signal chain for the recording was like this:

Large diaphragm condenser mic (Dachmann DA87i) close to the cab and a large diaphragm dynamic mic (Astin Element) about 12" away; D.I. was a @Pedalnetics DIm Stick.

The JC Emerald is an unsung hero of highly usable tones for bass and guitar and not just for dirt, it has an outstanding range for a clean voice. I do love my custom colored version.

I LOVE my JC Emerald, on guitar especially. It just breathes so well, if that make sense. Not a bad tone to be found anywhere in this pedal.

I'm glad I wasn't alone in feeling that - I don't know if it was because it featured one of the lower gain sounds, but it stuck out to me as well. Sounded GOOOD!
