The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Q for Nathan: I noticed today that I am running my PMLE off a single 12V CIOKS port rated at 500mA; and the pedal input is spec’s for 500mA MINIMUM. Am I either at risk with the borderline power supply capacity, or possibly not getting the most out of the pedal? Thanks.

Providing specs for power supply usage is one of my least favorite things because every supply is different and nothing is guaranteed. PMLE, like most of my single-tube pedals, will pull much less than 500mA when the tube is warmed up and the pedal is in "steady-state" operation. I have to call out a higher minimum number because the tube will try to pull extra current to get heated up, so you need to have some margin there. Once the tube is heated up, that margin really doesn't matter much.

Power supplies are often designed in such a way that you can exceed the output rating for a brief period of time without risking damage to the supply, sometimes as high as 120% of their rated capacity for a few seconds at a time. I've personally pulled 2200mA from a 1700mA OneSpot, which I do not recommend, but it was good to know that it's possible. Cioks does not publish a "maximum transient current" spec for their supplies, but I have found them to be in this camp where the supplies are capable of putting out a little more than they are rated for brief periods of time.

There are other power supplies out there that are designed with a hard current limit built in to reduce the possibility of damage to the supply, i.e. the supply is rated for 500mA, you will get 500mA and nothing more. Both methods are valid and both are still reasonably rated for the same spec, but because both of these methods are valid I have to call out conservative numbers when I specify minimum values for current.

Powering multiple Sushi Box FX pedals via standard CIOKS ports, is there a difference or preference to feed 9v or 12v?
Same port/supply, just 500mA@12v vs 660mA@9v, both meet power requirements.

I used to run a CIOKS 7 with many pedals, 2 of which were "500w minimum"/ 2-tube sushi boxes-never had an issue. Nathan has sated that 9 vs 12 V makes no diff in performance as long as the 500 watt requirement is met. They may take a few seconds to warm up, but no biggie.

That's where I'm at as well. I have a good friend that has a few of my pedals and he swears they sound better at 12V, but it sounds the same to me. I typically tell people to use whatever is convenient, and if you have both available try them both out and see if they sound different to you.
 
I just wanna say I was blown away by the SBVT-II that arrived last week (I think I bought the last one? They are not on the site anymore.) and now this week The Watt arrives, two somewhat different tools but each a work of art and sonic inspiration. At any price there is simply nothing better than whats coming out of @Sushi Box FX - I am just completely blown away.

I'm travellng a lot right now but when I get time, I'll post some samples to youtube. They are great on thier own, but two best combos I've found so far based on the gear I have a) Diamond Bass Compressor (original) into the SBVT-II and with with more sonic punch and control, the Tech 21 VT Bass Deluxe into The Watt. I'm just speechless. Sounds beyond perfection.
 
I use Cioks pedals. 9v is the most energy efficient. Some claim tonal difference with 12v but I can’t hear it 🤪
NO Samuel.......NO, we never use energy efficient in the same sentence as tubes.
Tubes and energy efficiency is taboo and should never be talked about at the same time.

I am generally very environmentally conscientious, but I have a few weaknesses/ willful blind spots. Preamp tubes are near the top of that list.
 
I just bought a Barber Linden EQ pedal - a Baxandall EQ, based on that of a well-known flip-top amp - sounds wonderful going into a Finally V3.
The very first prototype I did for Finally v3 before talking to Phil was basically a Finally v2 with a baxandall EQ, and it was a great addition. But both he and Mike Watt (I ask his opinion from time to time) agreed that a variable HPF would be more useful than an EQ on the pedal, and I didn't have room for both. But that was a couple years ago, and I'm smarter now than I was then, so I'm pretty sure I could figure something out.
