Well forget the gain stages and EQ on the SVP, that Ultra low rotary is only behind one valve, is it not possible to just add the rotary or is there a lot more to it than that?
It would be possible, but with everything that goes into an SVT the board doesn't physically have room for another rotary switch, I was barely able to get the mid frequency rotary in. I'll post a pic of the layout in a minute. If I went to a bigger box I would have more room, but with the box I have it constrained to (same box as Deep Dish/DrW X/SD X) it just isn't enough space.
Dang, I'm willing to bet if you put the mid selector beside the UL selector that Ultra Low switch would beat it out in votes, but I understand, its not the SVT. SVP-CL is actually out of a SVT2 Pro
Is it going to have all their odd cut/boost dbs? If I remember the EQ is a lot different than most, cut 20/boost 10, cut 20/boost 15, other than preamps in Fender basses you normally see people +/-15db and that's it, Ampeg's always cut more than they boost with their EQ
The SVP-CL still has the mid selector rotary though, if I took that out I would have to pick a frequency for the mids to sit at, and I would be terrified to pick the wrong one. I have these new boxes that I got for the DI shootout, when I have more time for development I'll bet I could fit something SVT-ish with more tone selection options in one of those.
But right now this is what the blank board looks like (from the backside obviously) with the tube connectors, pots, rotary, and toggles mounted, and all the components off to the side need to find homes on the board somewhere that makes enough sense to be connected. So that will take some effort
Yup, I agree. The SVT actually uses the same "James" tonestack as the Slampegg, the mids control is set up separately in (in my opinion) a weird spot downstream from the treble and bass controls.
We need more room for activities lol - I wouldn't have an issue with a bigger enclosure, but I understand most others would, I have a SVPCL and I would love to have it in anything under than half the size of the rack unit. Is it the rotary switch itself that is a problem? Would a sweepable mid knob be a solution, 200 to 3000?
I was asking him to add a Ultra Low rotary on the SVPCL in addition to the Hz selector rotary that would already be there. I wish you could have stacked pots built to your spec, within $$ reason
The size of the rotary is the biggest problem, but also the fact that I don't really have room for another knob right now either. It would have to happen in a bigger box.
Yeah unfortunately the values available for stacked pots are very limited. I can reach out to the manufacturer of pots that I use and see what they would charge as most of SVT's pots are the same value (A1M). It may be hideously expensive, but getting a quote doesn't cost me anything.
Question for my Dr. Wattson owners:
It seems like we're having a reverse spinal tap problem, the thing is too loud for a lot of applications. So would it be worth putting in a reverse spinal tap solution and make it only go to like 5?

For the most part more volume isn't really a bad thing, but when you're trying to match levels with other things it doesn't help if one of them is melting everything else with the volume at 9:00. There are a few ways I can fix it, trying to decide the best one.

If you do come up with something, could I send mine back to you if I find it's a problem?
For the time being, with no gigging happening anyway, I'm pretty flexible with how I patch things in my home studio. But for live I imagine it'd be nice to have it at least in range of unity.
