The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

So my big circuit board order was supposed to be delivered today, but it got pushed back to tomorrow because.... I have to pay $267 in customs fees on it. I've never had to do this before, but to be fair this is the first time I've placed a $1k circuit board order.

So in the future I need to order multiple small shipments instead of one huge one. Q.E.D.

Mine is being fed line level from a P-15, no overloading yet.
Good to hear!
By the time we got the PA set up last night and everybody settled in I was not in the mood to start experimenting with FX loops. But I’m definitely going to try the WH at line level sooner than later.

We mostly just played through songs that the singer already knew well last night, and started making a playlist for future rehearsal. Not overly groundbreaking or exciting, but still felt really great to be in the same room playing music with other people.

Preamp Out/Poweramp In is essentially what 99% of FX loops are. I don't specifically know of any integrated loops on amps that would be instrument level.
Well every head/combo FX loop I've placed a pedal in has never had a problem with being to high of an input, but on the flipside about every single preamp out/line out I've used to push a pedal has clipped though. It also depends on where the preamp out is on the gain stage and EQ to how high it will be. My current power amp, Rumble I had, Super read head, every Peavy head I've used, were all like that, FX loop wise, but any output from these lunch boxes (Bro tube boxes), line outs or preamp outs always had to be dealt with using higher power supply voltage. Most pedals don't accept line level input, why would they make the Fx loop intended for that purpose line level instead of instrument? not arguing, but if that's the case why?

Can someone help out with the mid frequencies on the selector of the SBVT. I'm about to come into one and want to know what I'm getting into. Also, I briefly read there is a mod coming to get one of the mid sections 800hz. Any word on this?

Sorry for the question. Yes, I tried to search. And yes this is all vague because I didnt think I'd be getting an SBVT so my brain filtered it out as irrelevant to me. That has changed.

Here's the data Sushi provided somewhere many pages ago that I can't find now either (but I did remember to put them on the new site!)

*edit: yup, I see the Hx typo :D

Thanks @Sonicblaze you were faster than me :P I'll see if I can find a few minutes during my lunch break or something to do some math for frequency changes to cover all the original SVT frequencies.

Well, if I'm understanding what you're saying, this makes sense. The FX Loop input should be able to accept nearly anything you can throw at it, as it's already configured to receive line level by design. Conversely, the FX Loop output sends line level signal, so it makes sense that it would be overdriving the crap out of most pedals designed for instrument level.

It also depends on where the preamp out is on the gain stage and EQ to how high it will be. I think typically FX Loops would be used for reverb pedals and the like, or rack FX units specifically configured for line level. Something like an overdrive pedal or pedal compressor would probably be specifically tailored to instrument level to get the gain structure right, thus not liking line level signals.

How do these sound? so far I've seen about 4 photos but nothing with it plugged in
They sound like rainbows and unicorns, mixed with roses and fresh-squeezed orange juice.

Just a lot louder. Like SUPER loud.

Seriously though, I'd love to hear what everyone that bought one thinks, but I love the way they came out sound-wise. Really rich and full sounding, probably not super useful on guitar but excellent on bass. It's up to you how much of the tonal difference you want to imagine comes from the mojo components and how much comes from running the tube at 350V instead of 235V, but either way the tonal difference is very apparent.

I think it comes down to more people putting effects post head all together these days. I do remember most sends and FX outs had level adjustments and pre/post options, you don't see that on the smaller stuff. Right now I just have one post preamp, max voltage but it works, anything less and its clip city.

Yeah I'd like to hear some ones thoughts too, some clips and/or Utube video. I know once I see a turret I automatically sound better and play 5 years more advanced, but that's just me and a analog deal I struck up with the devil a few years back ;)

I’ve had a little bit of time with it and I have to agree it’s pretty excellent. I’ll try to post some sound clips later today if I can…

Compared to my LUX pa tone stack - It is noticeably fuller and thicker in the low end than the LUX. The mids and the highs are similar to me as well as the overall gain/break up. I would say the sound is a bit more dimensional across the board. I know these are vague Terms and a sound clip is worth 1000 words so I’ll see what I can do…

I think I should add — LUX IS AWESOME. Love that pedal too. They are more alike and they are different from one another. I am keeping both of them if that tells you anything…

If your looking for an instrument level loop you could use a pedal like this one made by
Mosky

It’s just a switch and has no active components. It only needs power for its Led. I use it to keep my signal path short, by putting pedals I don’t use much in the loop. You can get it at Amazon.
