The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I'm digging through some old pictures trying to find something for wife, and I came across this old gem. This is what the original Particle Accelerator, Black Eye, and Wrecking Ball looked like, as well as the original Echosaurus and a couple other digital designs I messed around with then ditched. These were the days when I drilled holes by hand and just used the CNC for the vent slots, and finishing was spraypaint and laser engraving.

Looks like December 2019 was when this was taken, so still a few months before Talkbass found out who I was.

Oh that reminds me, another exception is a one-off Vampire Slayer I made with a 10MΩ input impedance for someone to use with an upright bass piezo pickup. So there's one somewhere out there in the world, I don't remember who it was or where they are :p

Definitely interested to hear your thoughts on PAX with the upright.

If the efx loop is line level, then in front of the amp is my recommendation. I might also run some form of buffer ahead of the PAx depending on the pickup in your bass Jeff.

and for those keeping score, there is a DR Wattson inbound.

This weekend's upcoming Mardi Gras Blues/Zydeco/R&B date will be recorded I believe. My plans are SlampeggX, Empress BC, Finally. Torn between my #1 Dual Darkstar chambered and Marco P Bass... tough questions to answer...

Thanks, probably no need for a buffer, the pickup likes the 1Mohm input on the amp so it should be just fine out front. I currently have a friendmade FET F2-B circuit in the effects loop and, aside from being a little touchy, it definitely warms up the signal in a way I like. I figure having tubes (and volume) with that circuit might get me what I’m looking for. The other direction is towards something like the W&C Phat Phuk B and away from tubes… we shall see (as he steps into the rabbit hole!)

Im the one that ordered the Vampire Slayer with the 10Mohm. To be honest, I haven’t used it with any upright bass, only electric. I wanted to see how having a higher input impedance tube buffer could possibly have an improvement in tone. I put a NOS Mazda 12au7 in it. For quite a while, I had it at the beginning of my signal chain. It did provide a nice clean and warm tone, and it seemed to give my tone more of a range, like having more bandwidth, so it didn’t sound as mid heavy or muddy. However, I also noticed that there was a lot more noise in the upper frequencies. More of pronounced airy high gain kind of sound. I understand that other things down the chain like compressors and other pedals were also probably adding to this as well. I ended up moving the vampire slayer after my compressor and into an always on fx loop that is before an Edison Night Owl. This is then blended with my clean. I found that this, along with all the rest of my chain sounds amazing! It gives a really nice tube amp sound and feel and gives a nice blooming tube expressiveness! And, there is no high frequency noise in this placement.

Stole a tip from @Ryan L. SlampeggX is now in an EFX loop on my HX Stomp, set as the first block in the chain. Second efx loop has Empress BC and Future Impact. When the Dr Wattson shows up, I'll drop i into efx loop 2 and move the comp and FI elsewhere. Output of the Stomp goes to Finally.

I'm going to need more efx loops ;-)

Me: "Alright, February builds are almost done, and there just a couple more repairs to finish up, then we can devote time to fine-tuning the handwired designs and working on Gondwana."

Also me: "I'm pretty sure I could make a tube-driven USB recording interface. That would be cool."

Absolutely doable. The microcontroller I'm using for Gondwana has a 96kHz 24-bit DAC, so that could be neat.

So hard to focus. Too many shiny things.
