The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

Finally got around to putting some artwork in the DIY Space Heater build. If anyone remembers the thread a while back about the AI artwork... that's what I used for my design. Just threw in a bunch of keywords, picked a look, and this is what came out. I thought it was kinda cool, so I decided to use it.

With that and a few fancy dress nuts on the stomp switch and the top jacks, it turned out pretty cool.

What LED is that?

What LED is that?

It's a standard 5mm blue led. Actually there are two of them, one is inside.

The visible LED is mounted in a bezel mount. I bought a ton of those bezels for next to nothing when Radio Shack went out of business several years ago. You can still get them at places like Mouser, StewMac, and BLMS.

Hypothetical question:

If someone were to create a two-channel preamp pedal based on the Dr. Wattson, what should the control setup look like?
  • One set of controls that affects both channels and a footswitch to kick on the extra gain?
-or-
  • Independent controls for each channel like Smoke Signal?

Depends on how different the two channels sound from one another. On my Meatsmoke head (and on the original run of preamp pedals), there's only one global EQ for both channels. Since the two channels sound so different from each other I find the single EQ points only work for one channel or the other, and I've never found one set of settings that works well with both channels. Consequently, I usually end up settling on one channel or the other for a whole set/show and don't switch after I get my EQ dialed in. Ben (Verellen) later added the second set of EQ controls for Channel 2 on the preamps to address this.

I mean they're going to share the same front end (Elementary), but there will be a difference in gain due to the extra gain on the Dr. Wattson channel, so I'm leaning toward completely separate controls so you can tune it better for clean vs. dirt.

If you have room for separate EQs, that would be the way to go.

I have room, I'm looking at the same size enclosure as Smoke Signal. I was trying to fit it in the DW enclosure, but then it would be limited to one set of controls and the footswitches would have to be way too close together.

I like my Tech 21 LM 300 and GB SM 9.2 heads, the functionality of the two separate channels with separate EQ and a mix function thrown in.

IMO, that's totally going to depend on the tone YOU want to get out of your design. Throw a Space Heater in front of your Elementary and see how you would set the tone stack with and without the Space Heater boosting it. Do your setting change drastically, or are they basically the same?

Again IMO, if you're going to do a two channel preamp, your original idea of a UA on one channel and an Elementary on the other seems like it would be much more flexible, especially if you could add another gain stage (i.e. Space Heater) to either or both channels. Bonus points if you can run them in series (UA into the Elementary or the Elementary into the UA) and in parallel.

However, the deciding factor always needs to be if these options actually produce tones that you like and/or you think your customers will like.

Bass players will want separate tone stacks for each channel, guitar players are too easily confused.
Boosting a single channel works on guitar because of the limited bandwidth that most guitar players use, but on bass changes in saturation have a wider effect - the added tone controls allow us to shape the sound as needed.

I recently aqueired an SBVT pedal 2nd hand in the UK, I play it through an ampeg PF50T and cannot speak highly enough about how good this pedal sounds! I use it to push the Peg into a nice tubey grind and it sounds glorious and works perfectly with the tube head. It only took me 5 pre-amps/pedals to get the sound i had in my head!

I've literally got a Sansamp and Two Notes Le Bass sitting under my desk and they not getting used again.

I really wanna add a Space Heater to my collection at some point to use as an extra boost.

Whatever you do, put an XLR on it!

That would dramatically affect both the size and the price, neither of which I want to mess with yet as this is an unverified design.

But this is pretty much what I have in mind for it. It has the same controls as Smoke Signal, so I designed it to go in the same template so I don't have to make a new drill file for it.

1 EQ set. My vote. Come at me. I’d rather stack a 2nd gain but prefer the EQ to be consistent.

With the DW, you said it uses two tubes, and 3 of the available gain stages (2 per tube)
The Elementary you say catches all the clean tone from the DW, but using only 1 tube (both gain stages)

If you plan on doing a dual channel pedal based on those, then having the second channel utilizing all four gain stages (like on the SS) would be best, IMO, as it would create the most amount of separation between the two channels.

My MORE is available in the classifieds! Literally a brand new pedal that I just won't be using and it's the awesome Rainbows End finish which is no longer offered. I just wanted to try something without a tone stack but I missed the tone stack of my Slampegg, so I'm open to trades for another Slampegg for my other board. I am picky on finishes...for example I won't offer as much for a raw/simple Slampegg but will go top dollar on white w/full color graphics!

For Sale/Trade - SushiBox MORE!!!

THIS. If both channels are based on the DW - and I pray that’s true - one set of EQ channels is fine. But if the 2 channels have different topologies (other than gain structure) we will need 2 EQ’s. All I want is 2 different amounts of gain that are foot switchable. The Free The Tone Black Vehicle is a great example of this.

That said, a great compromise would be separated one knob tilt EQ’s for each channel so that treble roll-off could be adjusted depending upon the amount of gain

Brought my gig pedalboard home to add my new HW Slampegg, I'm getting horrible popping when turning on the Slampegg, TC's, or turning the HW Finally into preamp or dry. Also, the Finally isn't acting the same (no 1/4" output in preamp mode). I'm thinking take out a TC and add a true buffer, or?

Chain is wireless>Visual Volume>Crybaby >TU3>Broughton HPF/LPF>TC Spark Boost>TC Spark>Slampegg>POG>Empress EQ>SD Compressor >Finally

Ignore the settings, the picture was just after I put it together, before I plugged it in
