The Sushi Box FX Secret Society

I run a Compressore and a UA, do you run the Compressore before or after the SH? I found it worked better with the UA before the Compressore.

I have the Compressore before the Space Heater (SH) and it sounds great.

I have a MORE being built and plan to score an Underground Accelerator (UA) in next month's build. Ultimately, I'm thinking about putting the UA at the front of my chain to set levels and then substitute the MORE for the SH. However, I have concerns that this arrangement plus the Compressore might get too squishy. In that case, I'm thinking of picking up an Empress or Broughton compressor to swap with the Compressore.

Looking at pulling the trigger on my first tube preamp (Slampegg/Dr Wattson) and have some maybe obvious questions.

How sensitive is the pedal to input signal? If I set the gain to clean/just before breakup, then use a pedal before to boost the signal (Spark mini for example) will that cause the tube to introduce more breakup/grit depending on how hot of a signal I send? Is there any downside to this? Does it cause an unnatural breakup or clipping?

As long as your boost has adjustable output gain this will work perfectly, but you'll have to get all your gain stages (including the bass) adjusted to your liking.

This will work beautifully and the breakup you're going to get will be tube saturation - or in other words: The best there is.
The downside is that you probably will re-evaluate other dirt pedals.

Perfect! Thanks for the reaffirmation. I thought that was right just want sure. Now to pull the trigger and clear some board space!

Comparing the Dr Wattson to the Slampeg, I know they are modeled after different amps, but can't decide which one I like better.

I've always been partial to the Ampeg grinding rock sound, but don't want to be locked to only that and fear that will disappear in a live setting with no mid control which I often bump for more presence.

Dr Wattson seems a bit more versatile having a 3 band EQ, though I suppose I could just EQ pre or post the pedal anyways so not sure it matters.

I plan on setting this just before breakup and using a boost to get into drive territory. Play mostly rock, some blues, and a splash of funk.

Thoughts from the hive mind?

You can also boost mids by cutting bass and treble. That said, the Slammpeg is modeled after the B15, which I don't think of as the grinding Ampeg sound. That's more an SVT thing. Between the two, I would expect the Dr. Wattson to be more inclined to a 'grinding rock sound' when pushed.

I agree with @eeyorebass Slampegg is a great tone and can get some drive to it, but it isn't what most people think of as the Ampeg grind. Dr. Wattson has a lot more gain on tap and can get a more aggressive dirty grind sound.

Super quick question: are there any bassists in the Chicago area that would be willing to test a pedal for me in the next day or two? I don't need a recorded demo or anything, just need an unbiased third party to spend some time with it and make sure it doesn't have any issues before making it publicly available. @FronTowardEnemy? @BooshBass? I know there were a couple more on here, can't remember who was who.

Thanks again for the input. Forgot that the Slampegg is after the B15 and the what I had in my head is the SVT sound. Dr. Wattson seems like it fits the bill, now off to hunt for one.

I would love to, however I wouldn’t be able to do it anytime soon as I am covering vacation schedules this week at work so no time for bass this week. Thanks for the consideration though.

No worries, there's a bassist that lives a couple blocks from me, but he's a borderline friend so he doesn't have complete impartiality. I'll figure something out, and you'll all be hearing something about Elementary soon enough.

Right on! Can’t wait to see what you conjure up.

And also, please do PM or contact me if you want someone to do a beta test. I would be more than happy to help you out.

If you're still looking for someone, I'm in the area! I've only owned a Slampegg for a month or two, but I'd be happy to help with opinions. We emailed back and forth about the center-positive mod for More, so that'd be the best place to reach me.

Brought my gig pedalboard home to add my new HW Slampegg, I'm getting horrible popping when turning on the Slampegg, TC's, or turning the HW Finally into preamp or dry. Also, the Finally isn't acting the same (no 1/4" output in preamp mode). I'm thinking take out a TC and add a true buffer, or?

Chain is wireless>Visual Volume>Crybaby >TU3>Broughton HPF/LPF>TC Spark Boost>TC Spark>Slampegg>POG>Empress EQ>SD Compressor >Finally

Ignore the settings, the picture was just after I put it together, before I plugged it in

I put the HW Slampegg on my home board, all functions good.

I also put the UA on my gig board, and was able to get the whining, squealing and popping all but gone. I'm not sure if I'll put the Slampegg back. It took a combination of gain, master, and treble adjustments (including on the Finally and the TC Spark). The added UA kind of tames the tone (unless the TC is engaged), but more experimentation is needed on this front before I draw any concrete conclusions.
