The TalkBass G.A.S. Test!

Do you spend more than 15 minutes a day gazing at the TalkBass classifieds? (5 points) If you spend more than 30 minutes a day on the TalkBass classifieds, add 5 points. If you spend more than an hour a day staring at TalkBass, eBay, Craigslist and online vendor sites, add another 5 points. Yes - 15 points

Are you familiar with the current inventories of an online bass store? (5 points) Yes - 5 points

Are you familiar with the current inventories of three or more online bass stores? (10 points) Yes - 10 points - Many websites bookmarked. Note my reply on the last item in this questionaire, as I specifically save weblinks to individual instruments.

Have you ever decided you *must* have a particular bass model without ever having played that model? (5 points) Yes - 5 points - Many basses on my wishlist are not available for me to try before buying.

Do you think about basses before falling asleep at least twice a week? (10 points) Yes - 10 Points - When I see pics of basses I'd like, I save a copy to my iPhone under an Instruments folder. I also save another copy in my Flickr so I can listen to music at home through Apple TV and watch bass images float through the screen.

Do you find yourself becoming infatuated with bass colors – e.g. seafoam green lust or red fever? (5 points) Yes - 5 Points - I had dreamt of my F Bass BN6 specifically in the Satin Blue No-Pore Filler finish. It was all I imagined when I received it, as I can feel the grains through the finish.

Have you ever taken delivery of a great bass, played it a while and then returned to the classifieds to look at more great basses? (10 points) Yes - 10 Points - I keep an updated Excel spreadsheet of all the basses I'd like with the specific weblink saved to the respective models at the best value currently. If ever I win a lottery, there would be a lot of happy TB Classifieds sellers.

----------

If you scored over 50 points, you could fill the tank of a ’73 Buick with your G.A.S.

I'm at 60 points. I can't bring myself to sell an instrument, so a few of the options did not apply to me.

Fun on a Sunday morning. (I'll disclose my score at some point. It's rather shocking. Intervention, anybody?)

If you spend more than an hour a day staring at TalkBass, eBay, Craigslist and online vendor sites, add another 5 points. I only give myself a 5er for this.

Have you ever publicly praised one of your basses as “a definite keeper” or said “this baby will be with me till I croak” and within a year put the bass up for sale strictly to buy another bass? (10 points) My 2000 Deluxe Jazz. I remember playing it just a couple months ago. My bass for life. Found a Warwick FNA for a good price, good bye Jazz

Are you familiar with the current inventories of an online bass store? (5 points) This is a no for me

Are you familiar with the current inventories of three or more online bass stores? (10 points) Thankfully no

Have you ever decided you *must* have a particular bass model without ever having played that model? (5 points) Numerous including the previously mentioned Jazz and Warwick Basses as well as a JAEBird (that I stull lust over) but never pulled the trigger on.

Have you ever hidden a bass under a bed? (5 points) Not a bass, but a couple Guitars, so I gave my self 5. I did once hid a 100w 15" combo from my (then) wife in the lawnmower shed.

Have you ever taken delivery of a bass from the delivery person and scurried with the large, rectangular box to a private place before your significant other could notice? (5 points) Oh, yea. Guitar again, and various cabinets and amps

Have you ever sold a bass strictly for the purpose of buying a new bass and later missed it? (5 points) Previously mentioned Jazz Bass. I still miss it.

Have you ever bought a bass, sold it, and then bought it back? (5 points) Nope

Have you ever bought a bass, sold it, bought it back, sold it and bought it back again? (10 points) I'd say this sound psychotic, but glass houses and all.

Do you think about basses before falling asleep at least twice a week? (10 points) Nope

Have you ever been forced to cut back on other, more important expenses due to bass gear purchases? (10 points) Thankfully no, but close

Do you find yourself becoming infatuated with bass colors – e.g. seafoam green lust or red fever? (5 points) Yes :crying:, how did you find my secret!!

Have you ever bought a model you’ve never owned before, say a Music Man StingRay, realized you’re not a StingRay person, sold the StingRay… and then later bought another? (10 points) LOL, no. But I can see myself doing it

Do you obsess over newfound “flaws” in your once-perfect bass? (5 points) mmm, no not really

Do you find yourself in a pattern of contemplating a new amp or cabinet purchase after a bass purchase and then a new bass purchase after an amp or cabinet purchase? (10 points) Yes. Everytime. Even did that on my last purchase.

Have you ever taken delivery of a great bass, played it a while and then returned to the classifieds to look at more great basses? (10 points) LOL. No, but I did take to TB to show off my new bass.

If you scored 10-25 points, you may have light to moderate G.A.S. If you scored 25-50 points, you have serious G.A.S. If you scored over 50 points, you could fill the tank of a ’73 Buick with your G.A.S.

I scored a 50!!! Damn!

LOL. Never heard of such a thing. But sounds cool! Exhibitionist G.A.S? :D

Oh good grief, guilty here. I tend to pick up basses at the UPS hub to reduce the chance of the box getting left on the porch (and/or the War Department or her spies seeing it first, of course). Last week I picked up a 1997 G&L that was boxed like something from Fort Knox for its transcontinental trip. Given the rather chilly climes through which it had journeyed, I was keen to open it up and check the condition. The counter guy helped me for what must have been 10 minutes to get the thing open.

Much ooing and ahhing when I popped the latches on the case! And in keeping with TB rules, here is a pic. Note the nice tort guard. :D

60 points in here, could score more but "the war department or her spies" (really good one) knows all my movements, specially when we live in a small apartment, so there's practically no place to hide...

There's one question missing in the test: "Salesperson and/or owner/manager at the local or big musical store greets you by your first name... 25 points...

So 60+25=85... :bassist:

I posted this thread on Facebook, but quickly deleted it when I remembered that though my wife isn't on FB, a few of her friends are.

Good call. FB is the work of the devil IMHO. You just gave me yet another reason to avoid it!!
