The TalkBass String Comparison Sound Clip Thread!

Alright! Finished up all my schoolwork, got the laundry done, and recorded the clips for the Ziko's. It's been a busy day

Ziko Strings. Also a Chinese import, these ones were a bit more expensive than the Caye's and Orphee's. At 14 bucks a pack for a 6 string set though, these are still far cheaper than any US made strings.

These are basically Mediums's, despite the package saying "extra Light".

Here's what you get when you take them out of the package:

nRaivVE.jpg

A tangled rats nest of strings coiled around each other randomly. You'd think that if the guys at the factory had simply taken the bunch and coiled them all into a loop as one set, they'd be relatively easy to take apart again. Nope, somehow they're all twisted around each other randomly so that you have to thread them through one at a time

And here's what you get when you finally get them apart:

lytROa9.jpg

Aaaaaand surprise surprise, two of the string have short windings again:

Now then, despite these minor annoyances, are these strings worth the price? Do they sound and feel good once you've gotten over the kinks and slid strategic pieces of paper into your nut?

YES!
sLUUTgK.gif

First off, these these things feel perfect. They're on the stiffer side, springy, and solid. They're just the right stiffness that makes it easy to dig in and make every note huge and responsive, without being so immovable that playing chords makes your hands cramp up. Playing them is a delight!

And sound: These things have a HUGE bottom end, without piles of low mids to gum everything up and make it muddy. The highs and high mids are present, without being rip-your-ears-off piercing. I kept fooling myself that they sounded like such-and-such different strings that I've recorded, but after comparing the sound clips, they're definitely their own particular timbre. If I had to narrow it down, they're kinda like a cross between Ernie Ball Slinky's and GHS Progressives.

and now, the sound clip. I went ahead and paired them up with Slinky's, because their kinda sorta similar... ish. Moreso than anything else I've recorded so far. Definitely better though, to my ears.

I'm definitely going to be buying many more of these in the near future. For something that feels perfect for my playing style, with fantastic tone, at 14 bucks a pop, I'd be a fool not to stock up on these in bulk.

Ehhhh low mids are the least important mids, IMO. They're the first thing to be cut out in any mix. They're the frequencies that turn not only the bass track, but everything else along with it, into indecipherable mud. I always end up dropping 200-300 hz down by 3-5 db anyway, so having strings that don't emphasize that range is a plus.

These Zikos seem to pump more into the 50-150 hz range, which is right where I want my lows: where they'll shake the walls and make each note pound like a sledgehammer.

I need low mids for my stingray mate, to me there isn't enough beef to it as its a naturally high end bass

Today, we have Dunlop Nickel Roundwound (none super bright) on the Stingray

DSC_0139.JPG

The first recording is a flat EQ comparison to the Rotosound Swing 66 nickel strings

And the second is different EQ settings to different styles

Same chain as always.

I actually like the dunlops, first time trying them, bit of a rough feel to them but very nice tension.

Enjoy!!

Here's some more! On a roll on my days off haha. Today we have slightly broke in Ernie Ball regular slinkies vs Adagio Professional Series 45 - 100 nickel on my Bass Collection Jazz bass. Found the Adagios on ebay, real cheap, so thought why not compare it to a popular brand. Bit of an unfair comparison with them being completely different gauges, but sod it. Here it is!

Jazz bass is flat and both volumes are up.

Chain is the same except for the jazz bass lol
Enjoy!

Nice @rob_thebassman !
How would you describe the feel of the regular slinky's vs the super slinkys? In your posts I've read that you like the 45-100 gauge? I really like the feel of the super slinkys(45-100) and have never felt that I needed to up the gauge? My fingers are fond of 80 A strings and only a few manufacturers make 45-105 sets with an 80. Rotosounds (my favourite!) Dean Markley Blue Steels, Labella Rx and DR used to have the Marcus Miller Fat Beams with an 80. I've tried several manufactures in the 45-100 gauge but usually dont get along with the 100 E. Too floppy? Maybe I'm too picky? ;)

The MJC steels arrived. I'm hoping to post some clips this weekend. i just cant decide what bass to throw them on! All of them have essentially new sets on them.

Cheers,
Brent

Haven't used super slinkies in years mate, the strings I used on that clip were a brand called adagio. The regulars however don't feel like they're that gauge, looseish. The feel isn't too rough either. I'm wanting to try super slinkies again though :) can imagine a set with an 80 has alot less tension than alot of 45 - 105. Defo want to give the La bella rx series another chance. I used to stretch the strings when I changed, bad mistake as I never realised it knackered them.

Can't wait to hear the MJCs :P what basses ya got?

Oh good to hear. I might have to give them a try.
Lets see...
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz
Fender American Vintage 62 Jazz
Peavey USA Cirrus 4 Bubinga
G&L L2000
Ibanez Roadstar 1986 converted to fretless. My first bass! Bought it brand spankin new in '86 right after I saw Rush' "The Big Money" video. I thought it looked a lot like Geddy's Wal bass. :)

I really want to pick up another Ric. I've had about a dozen of them and sold them all off for various reasons.

Cheers,
Brent

How bout the l2000 :P been curious about those basses, wanting to try that or a kiloton. Bet that roadstar looks cool and sounds awesome :)

The L2000 is wearing a brand new set of Dunlop Super Bright Nickels! ;) The L2000 is a beast. It is literally probably one of the best basses I have ever played. I ordered it in 2008. It's clear red with a maple fretboard.Gorgeous! It has G&L's #8 "Jazz" neck and the "Special K" wiring which allows you to switch to single coils. PLEK'd to perfection straight from the factory! I have never touched the truss rod since it came to the house! The neck has never shifted.
But!...I don't play it and I dont know why?
Ahh my Roadstar. :) The Roadstar needs some love and is definitely in need of a major tune up. But it's all original. Except for the input jack. I haven't played it in years. I feel I need to be in the "fretless" mood? Its got all the dings and dents for a 32 year old bass. But I will take it to my tech at some point if he's up to the challenge. ;) and get it properly set up.
Best wishes,
Brent

can't say that I care for the Adagio's much. Not enough low end in there. Almost sounds like it's coming out of an old radio.
