The TalkBass String Comparison Sound Clip Thread!

Hi Gents,
@rob_thebassman , @IconBasser, @Spidey2112
So I sent a note to MJC Ironworks praising their strings. I cant get over how much I like these! I let them know I would like to test out some of their other offerings. I also sent my recording from the other day. Obviously I dont have the chops of Rocco Prestia (endorser) but lets see if they contact me. I'll keep you posted!
Best wishes,
Brent

Glad ya like it mate :) really liking the eden patch on my multistomp
Yeah I dont know what it is about them? Good tension, not too much, not too floppy. Really bright and I like the mids as well and fairly smooth. Just a really good string and I dont feel I need the 105 E.
Best wishes,
Brent
I appreciate them alot more than I used to that's for sure, I know alot of people don't rate them, different horses for different courses I guess

Here's a comparison of 13 sets of strings on a Ken Smith CR5:

Here's a comparison of 3 sets of flatwounds on a Schecter Raiden:

Hope its useful to someone.

Awesome work BrBss! It's great to hear em' all back to back like that.

Out of all of them, I think I liked the DR Pure Blues the most. Might have to pick some of those up.

Right guys, today I have Dunlop Nickel Roundwound vs Ernie Ball Super Slinky.. METAL EDITION \m/

Apologies for the sloppy playing but was in a rush.

The signal chain is -
Musicman Stingray (flat eq)> Zoom MS-60B (volume drop to a passive level> sansamp sim ,bass -1, treble +3, presence +4, 50/50 blend, 80 gain > Eden amp + cab sim flat eq) > instrument input of Focusrite Saffire 6 > mixcraft 4

As much as I liked the dunlops, the ernie balls in my opinion win this particular round.

Enjoy

you know, surprisingly, I can't tell the difference between them when you're using a pick. That's usually when the differences in timbre come out the most. Must be all that distortion.

Hey guys, bought some Sit Rock Bright Nickels! Won't be using them til my next day's off. Debating whether to compare them to the super slinkies on my stingray, or compare them to another cheap ebay bass string set I bought on my jazz bass.

Which should I do then?

I like the SIT RBN on my G&L. G&L's use to come new from the factory with SIT strings. I have been playing in a 70-90's rock thing and they really do great in the mix with loud guitars. But overall are very versatile. I got the custom 5 string set 40-100 and really like the tension at that gauge and sure they will match well with your Ray. I'd do the slinkies.

Whats your G&l bass? Been intrigued about them

Well, look what the wife bought me

Gunna put these on my stingray after I've done afew more comparisons and call it awhile for that bass, as flats last longer. Will post clips though :)

I was going to get some d'addario XL nickels at some point but I feel that I've already covered that, with them supposedly making Fender 7250s. Any suggestions on what to do after I've compared super slinkies to rock brights nickel before I put the group 3s on? I do have used la bella flats so I might pair them with those :)

Yes, I do believe they have. They're the sweet spot I've been looking for tone-wise for my Cirrus, delivering the fat low end that the bass needs, balancing out (but not diminishing) the honky midrange that the bass projects, and delivering just enough highs and high mids to make each note and transient present and clear without being harsh.

It's like going on an all day hike through the Swiss Alps, and finally finding that pebble in your shoe that was mildly annoying you even though you were enjoying yourself. Just makes playing this bass that much sweeter.

Precisely the point of this thread, thank you for your service :)
Now that you've had the Zikos' a while, how well have they lasted ? Thanks for your input & where did you get
them ?

Ohhh they've lasted well enough I suppose. The zing is long gone by now and they've gotten a bit on the dull side. They're pretty dead by my standards, but not completely, not yet. By comparison, I'd still be playing a set of XL's at this point and be happy-ish with them, and I'd have chucked em' off weeks ago if they were Slinky's. Getting a full month out of a pair of strings without me reeaaaaally being tired of their deadness is a rarity. These have been on for 3 weeks now, and it's getting to the point fast where I want to change them.

For most other people, these Ziko's should last for months with no problems.

I bought them on aliexpress, which ships stuff from China, so it takes a while to get here to the States. You might try ebay or something to see if there are any more local sellers.

Hey guys! Today we have Ernie Ball Super Slinky vs SIT Rock Brights Nickel. And I'm really liking the rock brights!

I've started uploading my material on soundcloud now, soon I'll be making a playlist of all my Stingray comparisons so y'all can listen to them back to back easily :)

Here it is! Flat EQ of course

And here are some EQ clips of both of these strings, just for fun :)

Hells Bells Rob, what's happened to you, since you started this string thing, you're appearance
has changed, I don't recognize you any more. Stop taking them there pills.
And what's with all this 'mate' business, I feel as though I'm back home again, mate ?
