The TalkBass String Comparison Sound Clip Thread!

Right guys, I think that wraps it up for the Stingray, I have 8 different strings on a playlist now so folks can pick them out abit better :) I've not added the Johnny Brooks to this but still have the Johnny Brook vs Ziko.

Which one stands out to you?

All these are my opinion BTW, for anyone it maybe the total opposite

Strings I'd defo go back to :-

  • Ziko - full, punchy, not too bright. All rounder for any music in my opinion
  • D'addario - punchy and bright. Good to cut through with
  • Fender - full and not too bright. For more of a 'stingray' sound
Strings I'd consider :-
  • La Bella - punchy and bright, if I joined a metal band I'd happily use these
  • SIT - low mids, scooped, bright, same with a metal band but probably use with overdrive
  • Dunlop - great mid presence, maybe if I were to join a motorhead tribute band
  • Ernie ball - 'classic' tone, scooped. Defo for a metal band with overdrive
Won't go back to :-

  • Rotosound - great hi mids, but still doesn't cut it for me. I've tried rotosound so many times but are way to rough for me
  • Johnny Brook - do I need to explain?

Rotosounds ;)

In all seriousness I really like the sound of the Rotosound Nickels which is weird because I tried a set years ago and didn't like them compared to the SS Rotosound that I usually use. I really like the Super Slinky's and the LaBellas as well. The SIT's sound good to me as well although I had a G&L that came with them installed from the factory and remember not liking the feel for some reason.

Could I help you less? :)

I just put a set of DR Neons on my 62 Jazz. They were my last purchase from Bass Strings Online. Hopefully I'll have time to record some clips. Also my second set of Auroras just arrived so I think I'll put them on my Cirrus soon?
By the way MJC Ironwork still haven't contacted me. I sent an email to Aurora-no response, LaBella-no repsonse and an email to Black Cat effects-nothing. Is it my cologne?
Hope things are splendid in the UK.
Cheerio,
Brent

So I've installed the Johnny Brook bass strings, and there's afew faults.. The ball ends are absolutely tiny, and the wire from the ball end on the G string is sticking out!

I've recorded the first part of my comparison, and they are on thin side, not very bass at all. So here it is. So no one has to buy them haha

Yikes you could poke an eye out with that! ;)

If they sound better to you then it's all cool man :) that's the point of the thread innit. I suppose tastes change over time.

Cant wait to hear them mate :) always wondered what neons sounded like, was advised once not too bother with them as said person didn't like them, ah well lol.

You'd think they'd have common courtesy to say thanks for buying. It's getting colder here in the UK, got my jumper on haha. Everything OK over there?

5 day forecast for Los Angeles, CA: highs of 31,31,28,27, and 27 degrees celcius. I'm so envious of you guys, I want some actual weather for once. I'm so tired of sweating all the time!

If it's any consolation it's currently 4 degrees celcius here at 8 in the morning

Hey guys,
I did a quick recording of these DR Neons in blue 45-105 on my AVRI 62 Jazz. Signal path is my tried and true bass into my Line 6 Bass Pod Xt on the Eden Traveler head and Eden 4x10. Later in the clip i try out the Mesa 400+ and matching Mesa 2x15. I end the clip with a bit of Sansamp Bass Driver sim plus a SWR Sm400 sim and matching 4x10 SWR cab.
My impression? Eh?
This is my second time with these. They were my last purchase from BSO. My first try was a red white and blue set I picked up at a memorial day sale at Bass Strings Online. They are essentially coated Sunbeams which I haven't had the opportunity to try out yet but I've heard good things about.
I love the color. They stay in tune quite well. The first clip is in drop D and then i tune up later. The feel is a bit weird plasticy? They are pretty flexible and fairly low tension. I'm guessing they are still round cores like Sunbeams and Hi Beams.
The sound? I don't know. They certainly aren't as bright as I would prefer but I knew that going in. When you dig in they have a rubbery tone which I tried to capture in the clip as well as a non traditional clack on the frets. I would imagine they would look awesome glowing under stage lights but that's the point right? Would I buy them again? No I don't think I will unless they were super discounted. They are too expensive for my taste otherwise but they are supposed to be long lasting as well.
I don't know? I'm much more into the trebly twangy sort of thing. If any of you are interested in a literally new set cut for a Fender let me know ill give them to you for a decent price.
Best wishes,
Brent

So off came the DR Neons straight to the classifieds and on went a essentially new set of DR Hi Beams. Unfortunately I cut the Hi Beams for my 35" Cirrus which has tuning pegs in a 2x2 set up so the G string was WAY to short for my Jazz. So I had to order a single G string. Wait can I say that in a public forum? Anyway $14 later with shipping and I have one on the way. :( Man I miss @SLaPiNFuNK and Bass Strings Online. :(

The more I play bass, the more I believe the feel and tension is more important then tone, especially since most of the time I am going through the PA board anyway. Flats will sound like flats, rounds will sound like rounds through a PA and most of the nuances will not be noticed unless you can mic your cab and have a good PA. Even then your tone will be coloured by the FOH and sound guy.

Couldn't agree with you more, I prefer the feel of 45 - 100 and at same time cuts through better with 2 loud guitarists without being too muddy
