The trouble with drummers...

I have to say I've always played with really good drummers however we did have a guy answer an add to our add on CL for a main stream punk/rock band and this guy could not literally play anything faster that 120 bpm right in the middle of playing he stopped threw the drum sticks down and exclaimed "to fast for me"! .... ok had another guy email us a picture of a bunch of different drum sets piled together (and it looked like literally junk wish I could find the picture to show you) but it came with the caption "oh you'll hire me just from looking at this pic!" Another guy called me at 5 am on a Saturday to tell me he's ready to audition! (I worked nights then but was off on Saturday) I'm like "ok did you have to call and wake me up at 5am to tell me that?!?! He hung up..... other calls wanting to try out but we're told that "we" have to supply the drums! Or the old peverbial "I have drums but they are out of town in storage can you supply me with a kit?" ***!?????!?!?! Or my favorite "I don't have a drum kit or a car can you pick me up!

Back in the day (1970s), subbed on trumpet in a band in the seacoast area of NH (the Spectras), and the first drummer they had when I joined up was very good, a steady guy who hit all the right spots, and was fairly deaf, so we had to shout a lot...

The second one for that band was a young brash guy, like the rest of us, haha! He had a big kit, could play just about everything, and was LOUD. There was a song that had a drum solo, can't remember the name, and we would all leave the stage, go have a smoke, hit the restroom, hit up the ladies, etc., and mosey on back to the stage a while later, like 10, 15 minutes later. He would still be going strong, sweating profusely, and grinning like anything! Incredible stamina, great licks, and loved to get wasted. Wish I knew where he was now....

Drummer in my band now is a metronome, a great guy who is a middle school principal, and versatile with styles. His only downside is that he plays loud, even in practice. If we get on his case, he'll tone it down, though. Last practice he went through 2 sets of sticks.... Yep, I always wear earplugs. Love that guy!
