Those are just a few of MY favorites....according to ME, they wrote over 40 good songs, if you don't mind.
Hmmmm...guess all those Gold and Platinum albums were full of nursery rhymes.

I stand corrected. They're all masterpieces.

Yes, most definitely. To not have any bias would be non-human.

As it should be. It's all opinion, just like my post. All opinions are welcome on Talkbass (did you see my "IMO of course" statement at the end?)

I applauded KISS' success in my post. I wish them continued success! I never said their music was bad. I said it is simplistic. Their chord structures and modal choices are elementary as compared to the compositions by the bands I listed. Simplistic does not equal bad. It just equals simplistic. It works for their style and "product". FYI, I played a bunch of KISS music back in the 70's when I was a budding bassist. It was fun. Like I said, their music is easy to learn and play.....perfect for musicians just starting out. Like Mick J said, "It's only rock and roll but I like it".

You may have applauded them, but it was more of an backhanded compliment.

I still like any type of music I grew up with and I know you guys to. If you liked it then, there should be no reason not to like it still. It is part of your musical heritage that made you what you are today. It is no shame to admit it, even if it was Kiss, disco, or the partridge family :D

LOL!! Oh no.......please no. PLEASE do not bring Danny into this!!!!!

As for suggesting that I should still like KISS music, well, I guess I just grew out of it to be honest. At least that's how I feel. I liked it in the 70's. But after that, I lost interest and moved on to other music that was more challenging to play. I ended up playing in a YES tribute band if that is any indication of where my mind went for a while. We played their 70's material (Close to the Edge, etc.) Now THAT music brought my bass playing to a whole new level. But that is getting off topic.

THIS IS FOR YOU SACTOBASS!!!

I'm not so sure it's off topic. I think the point I originally tried to make has been (not surprisingly) misconstrued is that the topic isn't really about Gene. It's about basic unimaginative rock and roll that becomes popular. Hell, Spinal Tap was a parody of it and their songs were better than anything most of the bands they were spoofing ever did in real life.

Rock and Roll. It's fine. it's fun. But let's face it, a lot of it is junk.

I used to like jelly beans as a kid. I wouldn't defend them as a gourmet food.

Now YES -- they are on another level. Something we can all aspire to, but not really expect to match. THAT is music. Art. Greatness. And if you can grab a piece of it playing in a tribute band, I think that's really cool.

However, playing in a KISS tribute band would be really, really lame. (Unless you're under 17 years old).

You sound like one of those bitter old guys who works at guitar center. Almost made it types.

This is a classic example of what bugs me about this forum. I take in the good and try to ignore the bad, but this is ridiculous. The OP is sharing an opinion about a band without being disrespectful and then......from out-of-the-blue .......gets personally attacked. I don't get it.

I'd think that a fellow bass player would have more class and maturity than to go into personal attack mode, even if still a youngster.

Another thing, why is it, if you say you don't care for something, you get labeled as a "hater"? I wonder if the people that throw that term around lightly have ever looked up the definition in a dictionary.

Anyway, my 2cents.
IMHO, if KISS didn't wear makeup and dress up like comic book characters, odds are they probably wouldn't have made it. It was a gimmick that obviously got people's attention. I never bought into it, but that doesn't mean I hate it. It's the same gimmick that made modern professional wrestling a
phenomenon. I wouldn't argue about the success, it's just not my thing. Just my opinion which is not a BFD.

Well put! That maybe true in one's own mind. However, what one may like, others might not. Isn't it great to have such a diverse selection of music to choose from?

On the other hand, I don't think it is right to bash peoples taste in music, or bash them for listening to it. There has been too much of that in these forums, wouldn't you guys agree?

Because it's a convenient way of people putting someone down with whom they disagree.

And thanks about the remarks about getting attacked but I expect it. If you make people think or have to re-evalute an opinion, there will be those who get angry. Those who don't know how to respond with ideas, tend to resort to insults. The natural tendency is to dismiss a discussion that they cannot contribute to by attempting to dismiss the person bringing it up.

Just another day on a message board.;) It's just a shame it's those types of posts that tend to shut down an interesting discussion for everyone else.

Where did I bash anyone for liking KISS?
