Fair enough, but you have to advance a plot from time to time in order for tension to occur later. I agree with Dr cheese about the reality of a multi season drama and having to extend the story telling arc beyond what we're used to in standard horror films.

Okay, look, no one is suggesting that the show should be nothing but shooting zombies & people getting eaten. No one wants that. What some of us are losing patience with is the leisurely way they're going about 'advancing the plot'. Character development doesn't have to mean treading water for four or five episodes.

My biggest problem with the violence was the scene where David nearly takes off the zombie's head with a board, but then he beats the still undead zombie with the bludgeon edge of his knife when he could have cleanly sliced off his head and reduce the risk of spraying that infected zombie blood around.

Yes, Glenn is his name! I really had not even the learneed the character's names myself. I just liked the show.

Speaking as a strong horror fan, The Walking Dead would be unwatchable if it leaning too heavily on fighting and gore. It would also be like porn: simultaneously exciting and boring.

I guess a better analogy would be a war movie. A war movie cannot be a constant battle, it has to feature enough interaction between the characters to make the viewer care about what he or she sees.

IMO, the great premise of The Walking Dead is how do people carry on when the world as they know it has ceased to exist? I also think that the female characters are a great strength of the show. It would be way too easy to make this series nothing but non-stop @$$-kicking macho fighting where the women exist just to be saved and provide sexual favors as an expression of their gratitude to the manly men who save them. The show also has female writers, and the plot line involving the young Asian guy (Glenn?) and the vet's daughter is really cool. I think it is a nice object lesson in what women find attractive. In this case, the young, college-aged woman, takes a liking to Glenn, who clearly fits her age demographic. She also notices his strong points in a way that a more macho oriented reading of that character might miss. Obviously the main character's wife and her choices are a very interesting storyline, as it the case woman who has finally gotten her shooting together.

Re: The show's pacing, I admit I have a bit of a gripe with it myself.

The answer: It's AMC.

I learned this quickly with Breaking Bad, which is easily one of my favorite shows currently on TV. It's a great show, but there's a truckload of drama to be associated with every episode. You're getting a channel like AMC that loves to take shows with abnormal plots, therefore drawing people in instantly, but their bread and butter is the drama. They always center around character development and tension between people.

That is definitely a strong factor in The Walking Dead right now. I think everyone's opinions are pretty spot on in terms of not wanting too much constant gore, but yet wanting more zombie driven scenes. My guess is that the second half of the season may make up for this... the pacing becomes very different when you're given more of a full season to work with.

Lastly, obviously everyone can get headshots instantly. It's the same reason no one is worried about being contaminated when bludgeoning zombies. I will admit, I enjoyed when Andrea was trying to kill the zombies and missing horribly at first. It was nice to see a walker not go down right away.

I'm not sure if two weeks would be enough to get through all the characters. If you haven't noticed each episode focused more on a different character.

I do, however, think it's ridiculous that they still have hope that Sofia is alive.

I kinda wish the seasons were longer then I would actually have time to grow attached to the characters. And give a crap when they die.

Yes they are developed fairly well. But you don't have time to actually get to know them. I hope there's more flash back parts, sort of like they did in Lost. But unlike Lost, avoid focusing an entire episode on past events. I dunno, I haven't watched a tv series since Lost. So to see a season only have 6 episodes I'm like "that's it?"

I am thinking that Sofia has been found by either Merel, or another group of survivors. Maybe even Marcus.

Well, if the emphasis is on character development, it's to the boiling point by now. Everyone's cards are on the table, and it ain't pretty. I give it a matter of days before someone makes a big, dramatic, irreversable move. This kind of tension can't go on long.

Yes, the character development has been good, but it is really dragging by staying at the farm & looking for the girl. Next week is the mid season final already! They spent far too many episodes on the farm. The little girl was never lost in the comic. They better make the end result of her good or I will feel cheated.

What it means we will have to wait till things get really good (if they do like the comic)

I like the discussion in the Talking Dead about Ricks reaction to his wife's news. Funny when they stated the episode was written by a woman, it made sense why Rick acted the way he did.

emotions got the best of him. hes not that old, and certainly hasnt been trained to handle situations like this (like shane or rick, or in a way, daryl).

The last three or so episodes on the farm have dragged on long enough. Do something people.

the first 5 episodes were only in 2 places. i dont see the problem in letting things stew at the farm a bit. sophia is gone, people are hurt, half of them are going completely bonkers. we know that barn thing isnt going to last. people will boil over and there will be zombies everywhere. we have too few characters to kill someone important weekly.
