I love Bob Dylan.

No, not like that. I'm not some superfan who has every album, and can quote all kinds of titles and lyrics at you. (well, maybe SOME) I was watching a TV show, and a very cool, professional, great-sounding piece of music came on during the titles at the end. The instrumentation was fantastic, and Bob's voice fit the mood perfectly, and actually gave me goosebumps. It's one of those shows that was obviously written by a baby boomer/baby boomer-lite/gen xer who loves his/her classic rock. No I'm not going to tell you what show, because it will ruin this piece.

The very next episode of the show had an ending credits musical piece that sounded Hendrix-esque. It could have been Jimi, I suppose, but I doubt it, because I had never heard it, and I AM some superfan who has every album, and can quote all kinds of titles and lyrics at you.

I love Jimi Hendrix.

What struck me is that Jimi Hendrix loved Bob Dylan. I would like to believe that Bob Dylan also, in turn, loved Jimi Hendrix, and realized that Jimi Hendrix, one of the greatest natural talents to ever influence the world of rock music and pop culture, thought of himself as insignificant next to the great, legendary Bob Dylan.

And in a way, I suppose Jimi was right. Death robbed of us Jimi's potential legacy, although the one he did manage is not too bad by any measure of rock greatness, and musical genius, and I do not use the word loosely at all, for those of you fond of tired words like "overrated," and phrases such as "I just don't get it."

You DON'T get it, and neither do I, and neither does anybody else, so just abandon yourself to the irrefutable fact that music is subjective, and what is one woman's poetry is another's dirty laundry and day-old egg salad.

There's a lot in this world that I love besides Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan.

But that doesn't change anything.

There are musical greats that shine with the light of a thousand suns, and all the careful analysis in God's universe cannot even begin to poke around at the edges of what inspires us, causes us to dream and love and care and cry and sometimes, on a good day, even laugh.

If you don't get the point, take comfort that you are hardly alone.

But that comfort is all you get.

No soup for you.

Well said, mellowinman.

I came to the conclusion long ago (at least when it comes to subjective things like music) that if I don't get it, then it's not for me to get. If I don't like it, then I need to leave it alone.

Even regarding the things I do love - I don't need to fully understand them on an intellectual level. Sometimes I need to just kick back and dig it, and stop overanalyzing.

Opposite camp, here.
If I don't get it...it becomes my mission to figure out why.
Couple of examples: Late period John Coltrane & Bitches Brew-era Miles Davis. Took 25 years. Lotta reading, studying, listening, re-visiting, etc.
IMO, well-worth the effort.

I don't know about Art, but I know what I like:

Big-ass milkshakes.

The technical part - I agree. Trying to analyze why certain things move me or move others on a psychological/spiritual/emotional level? No thanks.

I guess it's a lot like food. There are lots of choices, and different people like different foods. There are some delicacies (such as chilled monkey brains) that "I just don't get" and never will because I *CHOOSE* to not pursue an interest in it. Same with roasted dung beetles, or escargot or frog legs. For those who love those foods, I say go for it and enjoy! I will seek my form of food happiness elsewhere. I love shrimp!

Same with music. I'm a die hard YES fan from the 70's. I totally "get" their music. Not everyone else likes it or "gets" it. No worries! :)

Imagine for a moment living in a world where we all like the same thing, drive the same make and model of car, play the same model of bass and amp, like the same music, wear identical clothing, etc. That is a freakish science fiction world that I would not want to live in. So when I see variety and differing opinions and differing likes and preferences, I am so very thankful for it!

Some folks love Dylan and Hendrix, and others don't. I am thankful for such differences of preference! That's what makes this world so great to live in.

I think I'll get some honey walnut prawns for dinner tonight! :)

To further torture the food analogy, sometimes there is stuff you really love, and that you used to ingest in bulk, but which now does not agree with you.
For instance, I still love Leonard Cohen's late 60's and early 70's work, but it is so dolorous and depression-inducing that I no longer consume that fare, particularly after six pm.
