When it comes to a lot of socio-political topics, if you're not getting emotional about it it's either 1) something that doesn't adversely affect you 2) You've been desensitized to it despite it adversely affecting you. Neither is good.
It's basically gotten to the point where if I see someone use the word "objective" or anything like it in a discussion about particular subjects, I write them off completely.
I don't think that anybody is completely objective. However, it is possible to discuss a topic that you're passionate about and do so with a cool head. Even people who take part in Oxford Round Table debates convey that they are passionate about their positions, but they still show respect towards the other side and don't regress into shouting matches and name-calling that mimic the average comment feed under a YouTube video. Unfortunately, a lot of people can't excercise such restraint.
