You have a degree?
As far as degrees go our last four Presidents and our Treasury Department along with our leading Wall Street Banking firms have all been run with men with degrees from Harvard or Yale. How's that working out?
I'm sure they can all spell mortgage backed derivative, a lot of good that did us.

Appreciate your insightful and articulate input into discussions and questions, as well as your poise when things get a little heated.
I have done work for a lot of PHD's and since my PHD is of the "post hole digger" variety, I like to pick the brains of real PHD's whenever I can.
Your taste in old Peavey basses is also admirable.

You've never made me feel as if you "rubbed it it" about your credentials.
You never really "argue from authority", even when I think your argument is wrong.

People undergo post-graduate studies to further their career, surely many times. Some times it is to further their own education, and is a noble pursuit.
Sometimes it is just to further their ego, and the inadequacies that may have plagued their life are swept under the rug with a title.
I have had a couple friends whom have held their education over me, or advanced graduate degrees over me at times, using them to insult me. Yet, I have had friends that were most humble and far more intelligent than I. Oddly enough the ones who tended to Lord over others with credentials tended to be the less intellectual of the multiple types.
Someone who knows they are intelligent doesn't have to constantly re-affirm it, or tell others. They don't need a degree for it either. Ego.

Hey Doc - I disagree with you a lot - I mean, a lot - and sometimes, I've even found myself wondering 'Is he serious?'
But I've never had any issue with you as an (internet) individual; while your opinions are diametrically opposed from mine, in many cases, I can live with that; you seem to be fairly reasonable and open-minded, and I think that if we ever happened to be in the same bar, I wouldn't mind buying you a beer at all.

Like others have said, I never felt that you used your education as an appeal to authority, Doc.
We're all informed by our own experiences and backgrounds and that does include our educational experiences and backgrounds. A pet peeve of mine is when people talk about a subject in which they are completely uninformed to speak yet they speak as if they are informed. That really has more to do with taking the time to become informed rather than any abbreviations behind one's name.
I'm currently a doctoral candidate. I have a feeling I'll be one of those people who will try and downplay the "Dr." in front of my name. I don't like being called "Mr. Liquidmidnight" or "Sir" as it is.
...of course, if I ever teach, I'm hoping that I only have to teach grad students where it's often socially acceptable to call your profs by their first names. Teaching nothing but grad students: It's a good dream, amirite or amirite?

so true. since most of my adult life was spent in university towns married to a phd, i have found plenty of phd's that are BIG ego-trippers that seem to need to compensate for something. or at least give a little subtle disrespect to anyone who does not have letters after their name.
ftr, i appreciate your critical-thinking and your threads, doc. i don't think i was aware you actually are a doc of philosophy. i will try not to hold it against you.
