Wow. I would think this would be such an easy question. Especially for musicians. Didn't you guys grow up with music heroes that were basically a few years older. At some point it seems like you would take notice of this phenomenon happening.

I've just never really thought about the ages of people I listen too. The only time age comes up with regard to famous musicians in my world is when I go to a concert only to see a band of old people who should have quit while they were ahead.

So it's actually a pretty hard question to answer for me.

I have always been a fan of "older" music so, no. But, it gives me severe pause when I think that Jerry Garcia died at the age I am now.

These guys were in their teens when they changed their name from The Blue Shadows to The Red Devils. They were in their early twenties when they put out a live album entitled King King (their only LP), but they also recorded a session with Mick Jagger in (I think) 92. They sill show up occasionally playing live.

Once I turned 28, most of the musicians I admired were either older than me or had ceased in the aging process. I had stopped listening to pop and rock music in my early 20s and concentrated on jazz. Most of those musicians were quite a bit older. When you realize all of your favorite bands are either in the oldies bin or lumped in the miscellaneous rack according to the first letter of their names... Anyway, I'm old, alright?!!!! What're you gonna do about it. huh? Get off my lawn, whippersnapper.

For me, it was the Cranberries in the early 90s.

Well I'm definitely older than Maria Brink or PJ... and a lot older than Avril...

Actually first were probably Alanis and Cerys Matthews in the late 90s.

who thinks about an artists age?

A lot of people do; say you’re still struggling at a local level in a band, and you’ve reached your mid or late twenties. Some ‘latest sensation’ comes along, who might be 19, 20, 21, and all of a sudden you might feel passed by, too old, etc. It’s not a hard and fast rule, but generally the labels(back when they were still relevant)would not sign bands with members approaching 30. Sure, there are exceptions, but they’re few and far between…look at Leonard Cohen, but that was a different time, different place, different context. It’s a hard sell to a teen audience, who doesn’t want to see anyone ‘old’. Complain about it all you want, but it’s human nature. Even if a musician doesn’t have big time aspirations, there can be a “what have I done with my life” moment when some wonder kid comes along, being brilliant right out of the box.
