Thin Lizzy - Mutron?

It's a phaser set to a fairly deep sweep. Almost any bass-friendly phaser will work. "Mutron" is not a specific product, it is a line of different products by Musitronics; so he might have meant a Mutron/Musitronics phaser. However people commonly use the word Mutron to mean their most popular item, the Mutron III, which is an envelope filter. Because of the deep sweep in the sound used in that track, it could sound a bit like an envelope filter, but I'm pretty sure it's not.

I was thinking it sounded like the MutronIII, which is the product that I meant, as you suggest, when I said Mutron in the other thread. I don't remember the exact setting, but that unit had a deep phase sort of setting that sounds like that clip a lot to me.

The MXR Phase90 would sure get him there also!

I think I'll play about with the small stone for a bit, I can pick it up for £20 (~$40), the Phase 90'll cost me £65 (~$130).

If I start getting close, I'll pick up the Phase 90 when I have a bit more cash (after christmas). Is the Vintage Phase 90 much better than the standard one?

Is there much benefit in paying the extra cash for a Phase 100?

The vintage one is not that much better than a new one, not to where it would be noticeable under most gigging circumstances. And the 100 has some neat extra options, but if all you want is the one basic solid tone then the 90 has that covered.

The effect that Phil is using is an old rackmounted MXR Flanger/Doubler, same one Dimebag used.

I've managed a passible version for jamming thi song with a Boss BF3, but its just passible, not very close.

It DOES remind me of my Mu-Tron (phasor ll). Good for really stupid-deep sweeps, fer sure. I see them occasionally on Flea-Bay for around $300.

I can't remember the Mutron model I had (II, III... it was a long time ago!), but it did sound like that to me also. I know remember that I also owned that rack mount flanger/doubler mentioned above. That thing was about the size of a Thunderfunk head!!!!

Oh yeah certainly if the Mutron you had was their Phasor II then it would cop that sound 100%. Phil is also known to have used a flanger sometimes, and you can def. hear it on some tracks, but it seems to me his phaser sound is better-known, and well-represented on the track above.
