Americans call certain stores "drygoods" stores. We don't do that here...at least where I live.
I had an American couple ask me where the nearest "drygoods" store was...and I had no idea what the heck they were talking about.

I've never heard that. I was born, raised and lived my entire life in the US. I have never heard of anyone asking for a drygoods store. Northeast, mid-west, and the mid-atlantic.
I'd be like, "What exactly do you want to buy?"

I'm American as **** and have no clue what a "drygoods store" is. Did they mean bulk foods?

Weird. That's an antiquated 19th century term. It meant a store that carried consumer products that were not groceries or hardware, like clothes, bedding, etc. Seems the term originated in England in the 18th century meaning textiles.
