Pump before pay gas stations. There is one hold out in my area, a chain called Stewarts (kind of a throw back to begin with) and its the only place I will get gas if I can help it. I find it a bit over the top that every gas station is 'pay first' these days and it's a little bit insulting to the customer, IMO. It's like saying "We don't trust anyone and $100 worth of stolen gas is worth the extra pain in the ass for you." More of the "F-U PAY ME" culture. Nauseating.

You can still find a couple in Lincoln, Nebraska. Johnson County, Kansas has a law for it, it's pre-pay everywhere. You should hear the people from out of state whine about it when they're here... and in that thinking, go wherever they're from, because they're still surprised by it. Usually they have the accent of someone from southeastern Missouri.

I know there's no profit in gas, it's what is purchased inside that drives the business. It's a crummy racket indeed. I'm just fed up with the chains (that's pretty much all there is now) acting like the margin is any greater than it was 20 years ago, but it all ties in at the end of the day I guess. Its a trend that started about the time we invaded Iraq and was solidified with Katrina. Never went back to 'pay after' after that. The problem I have with it is admittedly trivial and selfish, but yes, the 40 seconds that pre pay ads to my stop at a gas station just amplifies everything that is wrong with the world to me.

How is rearranging the order of the transaction adding to the time it takes?

There is a delay when the pump approaches the amount paid. There is no standard for the delay. Some begin 30 cents or more before finishing and come almost to a grinding halt as they approach the total. It's obnoxious and I suspect there's more to it than the obvious reasons they set their pumps this way.

True, but this only happens when you pay an attendant, upfront for a certain quantity. If you just swipe at the pump this isn't an issue at all. I suppose there are still some stations that don't have this feature.

The myth: margarine is one molecule away from plastic

This claim has been circulating on the internet since at least 2003. Plastic is a polymer, made up of a long chain of repeated smaller molecules. Plastics are usually made from crude oil and natural gas, but can be made from natural materials such as wood, corn, plants, and even sugars. In fact, one of the earliest plastics made in the 1800’s was from milk. So whilst both plastic and margarine can be made from vegetable oil, that is where any similarity ends. The claim is nonsensical - adding one molecule to margarine won't turn it into plastic.

Even if it were true, it’s worth considering that one molecule can make a world of difference. Many natural substances are very similar in chemical composition but very different in appearance and effect. One molecule, and more importantly how the molecules are arranged, makes a huge difference to the end product. Take for example the difference between hydrogen peroxide (bleach) and water, which have only one atom difference.
