This robot is actually known as Mazinger Z in Japan. he had an anime and there was also a very successful spinoff called UFO Robot Grendizer which was huge in French speaking parts of the world (including Quebec, all the kids my age watched it). I did read Mazinger Z comics as a kid also as they were translated into French.

Mattel simply bought the rights to the characters likeness to make toys with them for the north American market. Interestingly, in the late 70's Marvel got the rights to three of the toys to use in their comics thus bringing japanese anime robots into Marvel universe canon. When marvel lost the rights, the three robots and their pilots were killed off pages.
