Things You Don't See Anymore Part 3

Those are the cigarettes my mother used to smoke :). She used to send me to the grocery story, havning had me memorize...

Benson and Hedges menthol lights, please. That was a mouthful for a 7 year old. Or at least, this 7 year old :) .

$.65

And I'd buy some candy with the change from the dollar bill.

Back when I was selling them (when I worked in a market in the mid 80s), they were $1 with tax. Times have changed!

B&H had the most impressive packaging; very upscale paper and printing. I once bought a pack just because I loved the look (I smoked ONE cig when I was a boy so I knew they were not for me.).

(And a pack of cigs is insanely fun on bike rides with the serious set. I’d wait for someone to cough and then whip out a pack from my jersey pocket and suggest the guy or gal switch to filtered. Or, I’d ride up alongside someone and just offer a cigarette. Big laughs every time.)

In 1985, I too worked in a grocery store. They were $1.25 IIRC.

And now ya got me memberin smoking things...

As much as I hate to admit this, I smoked TONS of B&H menthol 100s. I started smoking at a very young age (5th grade, however old that is), and the only way I could really get cigarettes was by stealing them from my mother. She smoked enough to not notice when packs disappeared from her cartons. I remember the rush I'd get when I got my hands on a fresh pack, or bought my own brand new box of Marlboro. I was in love with cigarettes... I proved that for the next 20 years, and then was blessed to be able to quit. Those fokkers owned me! Harder to quit them than alcohol.

I got lots of smoking stories that I'll spare everyone but just want to note that in HS, I smoked Kent. I actually liked them, but what I liked most was it scared off grubbers (and there were lots in my HS). They'd say, "Got a cigarette?" I'd say, "Sure," and open my pack of Kent. 99% of the time they'd say no thanks and move onto the next person.

I did the same by buying cases of Piels and Black Label beer when my parents went on vacations and we had parties. Everyone that came over said, "Forget it. We're going to go get our own beer," and would come back with cases of Bud.

My mother smoked Kents. In high school I smoked Salems. Then I quit for a while and started up again with Marlboro lights. If I ran out of cigarettes, I’d bum a Camel off of my step-dad. I hated those things, mostly because they were hot and harsh and it was impossible to smoke them without spitting out little bits of tobacco that you’d invariably get in your mouth if you didn’t tamp them down properly.
