We had those in a couple of places when I was young. Thee digit phone numbers as well. 1 exchange for a thousand phones. Although realistically less than that. Capacity for growth and all.
Boy, you wouldn't get people to go along with all that nowadays.

People don’t realize it but “party lines” were the original cause of identity theft. Forgot to mention “word processors”, safety rings on truck tires, hand crank can openers, and tube testers at the local drug store. Gas was like 28 cents a gallon in ‘67, had just increased from 14 cents, and people were outraged. Stations used to give out cups and plates if you filled up your tank.

Remember when they used to come out and pump it for you? Speaking from a California point of view. I know in some states they still do. Got yelled at in Oregon for trying to fill it up myself!

Learned about the Oregon law in 1970s. You’d have thought I’d killed somebody.
Standard Car trunks that you could put an 8x10 cab in, two bodies from a “Goodbye Earl” maneuver, and have room left over. Such was my ‘65 Impala SS.
Mine wasn’t a Pulsar, but I did use one of these in the early 80s - I had a second job running a print shop, and it was very handy!
Not saying you're wrong. But my experience of party lines was you knew everyone on there. I would've thought tracking down your neighbour who was impersonating you would take less time for those old school cops than beating a confession out of them.
Of course, identity theft would have looked very different in those days of bankbooks and paper deeds.
I remember using phones without a dial.
Asked an operator for a 4 digit phone number.
In the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
Now I know where they got the “BR549” or something like that On Hee Haw. Sounds like the one my parents used to have.
Was meant as humor as much as anything else, actually I couldn’t think of anything else to say.
Your post got me thinking about those days. As did my response. Which looked different by the end than I thought it was going to. Couldn't work the bit about no record of those calls in there. So much you don't see these days from your comment.
I was cleaning my basement this week, and found a whole bunch of these stored in a box. I still have an MD player down there as well.
Seemed like a cool format. The pre-recorded ones seem quite collectible.
I used it for a few years and thought it was solid. I even had a Yamaha 4 track minidisc recorder, which was great!
