I didn't grow up poor but we certainly weren't rich, either. I remember in high school (late 70s) Nikes and Adidas were around $25-35 a pair, and we couldn't afford those back then. So my most expensive shoes were the 'almost-as-good' Kinney imitators ($16). I remember being the first (and maybe only) kid wearing the upside down Nike swoosh. Sure the richer kids made fun of them but I didn't care, I was just happy to have decent shoes that were sort of a name brand and weren't from Kmart.
