What I was taught is that you put the customer's money on the shelf above the cash drawer, open the drawer, count out the change, wait till the customer accepts it, and only then do you put the customer's money in the drawer. This prevents the scam where someone gives you a 10, and then claims they gave you a 20 and you owe them an extra 10. It does increase the risk of the reach-snatch-grab robbery.Some of those would calculate change if you punched in what the customer paid--good way to keep track.
I know "iron horse" used to be another name for train. I did not know there was an actual iron horse!
