Sheesh, I can't tell you how many Volume 1's of encyclopedia sets I accumulated growing up, all from grocery store promotions like this one. Never ended up collecting the full set of any of 'em.

But the good thing is I know a helluva lot of stuff about all things starting with the letter 'A'. From Aardvarks to Azerbaijan!

If your local paper recyclers won't have them, it may be worth looking to see if there are any film/TV "prop houses" in your area. You likely won't make any money from it, but they might take them as a donation to be used in sets for shows that need an era-specific look.

Yeah. I have a coupla full sets. No one wants-or will take-them. I hate the idea of adding them to the landfill(Mt. Trashmore).

I'm guessing there is nothing in them regarding disposing outdated reference books.

I suppose someone could put them in a bookcase and use them purely as decor. An encyclopedia set might even make a good conversation piece.

That sounds like about a half a step short of book burning, something I am not in favor of. Good luck finding a place for them, no sarcasm intended.

That reminds me... i think we had this one back in the 60s (and I read the whole set cover to cover in 1968 or so)

I have a Complete set of Encyclopaedia Brittanica that I purchase in 1990 to help my kids whilst they finished High School. Shoulda known better as we were all computer literate back then. Eldest after his first computer lesson at High School was told by the teacher, "turn up at class every week, teach us what you know, and you've passed".

Miss them a lot! I could walk in to the local one, sorta describe what I needed, and the owner would go over to a cabinet, open the correct drawer, and hand me what I needed.

Yep, remember every single one of those!

Except we never had the TV 'clicker'. That's what me and my little brother were for.

Which was moot, since my dad would get up and adjust the color/tint/hue/contrast/brightness, etc, with every new program. After we finally got a color TV, watching football was a nightmare. He'd get up and adjust it repeatedly, complaining the color of the grass wasn't the right shade of green.

Funny we still have a complete set in a bookcase and I just told my wife we need to clear these out! My kids used them for homework quite a bit pre-internet.

They may be obsolete, but they still look good on a shelf!

I still have my World Book Encyclopedia Cyclo Teacher I got when I was a kid.
