If we will talk about the Golden Book series, I will bring up this book that we had at our house, and which my mother read to me in the late 1950's
Little Black Sambo: Invalid Link Removed
My wife still has her copy of that book. Along with most of the Dr. Seuss books that were banned a few years back.

We had a Sambo’s restaurant where I grew up. I would go in and flirt with the late night waitresses on my way to midnight shift at my summer job. That job convinced me to go to college.

Some of the Sambo's in FL were bought up by Denny's. They closed for an hour, put up new signs, and put out new menus-with the same items.

Me too. They were the cool pen to have when I was in middle school. The first one I got I earned from selling the magazine subscriptions. I can still remember scanning that catalog of prizes and zeroing in on that pen. It was offered in chrome and gold. I chose chrome.
I think it was these that kicked off my obsession with writing instruments. It's cooled off as I've gotten older and when we downsized, but I have a nice drawer full still.
