I don't think it would be possible for that watch to look any cheaper than it does. It looks like it would have been rejected as a Cracker Jack toy!
I can still feel the texture of that binder!
Replying to a VERY old post about mechanical devices still in use...
How about these tools: Ratchet, crescent wrench, Stilson wrench, pliers(slip joint, diagonal, vise grip, etc.), various clamps, tape measure. There are probably more
People tried, and tried, and tried, but the only solution was to use electrons.
I still have a couple of those cloth-covered binders that I bought for my freshman year of college. They are SUPERIOR to plastic ones - Xerox toner doesn't stick to the covers! But, sadly, pretty much completely unavailable today.
All of those items are on sale at every big box and small hardware store and are in daily use by tradesmen all over the globe. That hardly qualifies for "things you don't see any more".
In the trades, we can certainly point to things like the plow plane (replaced by the router); the folding carpenter's rule (replaced by the retractable steel tape); the water-tube level (replaced by the inexpensive laser level); dial and vernier calipers (replaced by electronic calipers); the surveyor's chain (replaced by rangefinding transits); and suchlike; but the basic hand tools you're referring to are totally in daily use.
I wasn't clear: that part of the thread was a discussion was about purely mechanical things that ARE still in use sorry for the confusion
Did you ever live in Bend, OR? The last Blockbuster is still open there.
