Thinking about buying a Rick!

i just got my first Ric a couple months ago.
bought from Sam Ash for $1535 usd
i got them to give me an 15% off sale
shop around - you dont have to pay full price

it is not the only bass i play but i am glad i have it
the craftsmanship is amazing
well worth the money
i love this bass

You do have a good point. Even if I don't like it, it'll appreciate in value for sure. Even the Geddy Lee I have has gone up in value. When I bought it, I bought it for about $979 or something like that and I recall going to the store where I bought it later and them telling me that it sold for around $1200 I think now.

i feel the same way about the sound... i cant dial in that classic rick tone.... i know its possible... dude at sam ash dialed it in before he rung it up for me lol but i dunno.. i can dial it in when i DI into my mac, just not thru my amp lol

and while playing one of my harder songs, the edge of my rick tore some skin off my wrist.... i posted pics in the rick fan club thread part 2....

That is the thing...

I bought a Ric several months ago from another TB'er. Traded him my Geddy plus cash for it. Never played one before. I got it and love it, and since I played a bass that had a vaguely similar shape (and was heavier) for over 20 years (a Guild B301), it felt right in my hands...however...I dont get that "classic Ric" tone from it without some heavy EQing.

It still sounds great, and alot more versatile than people on here give it credit for. Each bass is different no matter the maker, but it definitely is not like I plugged it in and suddenly I sounded like Chris Squire or anything. Good thing is you can probably sell it quickly for close to the same money if you dont like it.

If you don't like the body binding and sharp corners, why not get a used 4003S, a 4001S, or a 4004?

I think a lot of the sound has to do with technique, such as a hard attack.

and as far as guitars go.... would u consider a fender strat? lol my friend doesnt use a pick, he strums with his thumb... well he misfired once and sliced flesh off his finger from the cuticle to the first knuckle..... guitar was cream white too....homeboy didnt even stop playing, he bled all over it and afterwards, while he was cleaning it off he found the chunk of flesh in the bridge....

I saw and got to play a Ric for the first time last week, there is a used one in brand new condition for sale at the Guitar Center in New Rochelle, NY, where I am visiting. I really liked it and could easily acquire the Ric disease. They want 1750 for it, it looks brand new and is an 07 or so I think. I really didn't want to know too much about it as it was really tempting.

First time picked it up I thought the neck felt weird, but as soon as I started playing it it felt great. Sounded great too, through a Markbass combo. Very dangerous.

Had to leave as I already had bought another expensive toy there...

How'd you play it? Standing or sitting? If sitting, did the binding bother you at all?

Funny story, the guy with the Ric that I wplayed that was all buggered up imo...he HATES rics. Think's they're awful blahblahblah and I want one so bad haha. I actually like his bass more than him! I've also been watching YouTube video's of ricks being played, and whenever I hear any of them (provided they are good quality obviously) I want one more and more! I LOVE the tone!!

I also don't know if I don't like the binding or sharp corners but I cant remember that ric bothering me, and I dont like the looks of the 4003S, 4001S and especially don't like the looks of the 4004. The binding kind of makes the bass for me, ya know? (along with everything else!)

In your OP you said you had a j and p bass, and you've already tried a Ric so really it sounds like a great opportunity for you to grab a classic bass if that's what you want.

I found the binding uncomfortable, sure --but I never opened my wrist up like that dude a few posts up!. And it didn't stop me from keeping the bass for many years. I just found I enjoyed Fender style basses more.

And yes, you'll find plenty of folks that hate Rics. They're not for everyone, but so what? You may love it, and it will be a cool graduation present.

Well, if that's what makes the look for you, no point in complaining about the body's sharp corners. It wouldn't have them except for the binding.

As others have said, Rickenbackers aren't for everyone. But then, no bass is. I myself really do not like Fender P's at all, despite them being loved by countless others.
