Opinion/Suggestion - Quite sincerely .. a Ric is a bass you want to play in person before buying
Um, I'm the one you quoted on the "love them or hate them" line. I thought my opinion was already known.
Okay, let's say I go through with this and buy it off of Musicians Friend. What if I get it and I love it, except that there's something wrong with it? What are the chances of that? Example being paint job is crappy, there's dents etc. etc. What do I do then? Am I stuck with it or can I send it back for a different one? They must package them really well though hey? The first Geddy Lee I bought had some sort of paint defect which I didn't notice till I got home, so I replaced it the next day with a better one, because I'd bought it at a store.
It's unlikely you'd have any problems, (other than set up) with a brand new Ric. And MF has a 45 day return policy.
I bought mine from MF, sorry to all that hate them. It came quickly, price was fair and it was spotless. I have heard stories of screwed up basses coming from them, but they will take care of it. My only big purchase from them and I was very satisfied.
I'll think about it then I guess. MF won't have them in stock till the tenth though, so I'll have time to think about it.

There are a few threads on here about issues with fret edges cracking the neck binding, finish issues from the Blueburst a few years ago, and of course crooked pickups.
No, Rics are not perfect, sorry, no bass builder is. Just give it a good once over when it arrives.

Oh no I meant just generally thinking about it, you know? I wasn't referring to thinking about it because of worries about defects or anything, and yeah, I love the JetGlo
Edit: Oh! 45 day return policy? So if I keep it for around 30 days and don't like it, I can always return it!

A Rick, A P bass, and a Jazz will solve the issue of playing with other players. So will practicing for 2 hours a day and taking one lesson a week with a good teacher....
My situation's changed quite a bit now. I didn't realize that the MF price was an Amercian price, and I did the exchange rate, plus GST, which bumped the price in CDN to 2380, before shipping and handling! I don't think it's worth it anymore.
Edit: Unless I can find a cheap US dealer or something....*sigh* I was so excited!

HEy, I waited 10 years to be able to afford mine, you will have a lot of fun spending that money on other gear. I doubt highly R.I.C. is going anywhere any time soon.

Or you could wait patiently while you found one with a good price. They are out there. Just sit tight and be on the lookout.

I hear you. I bought my 4003 brand new around '85 for $799 and believe me at the time I thought that was pricey.
Like Tarrbot says, keep your eyes open. If you are set on getting one, consider buying a used 4003 from a fellow TB'r in the classifieds when one comes up.

So, stay excited! Save your (Canadian) pennies and keep your eyes open. GAS is a bitch, welcome to the club!
There are a bunch of 4003's out there right now in the $1200-$1500 range on Craigslist. I just did a search and more than a dozen came up.
