Go to TalkBass classifieds, type in American Standard Jazz Bass and see what the selling prices were. Check Reverb.com too. Check eBay sold listings.

Overall, the prices for used basses and guitars is pretty shabby right now. Since 2008 economy crash, used stuff sells cheap!

If a bass has a unique or very catchy finish, or is something totally awesome, or is feather weight like below 8 lbs.............it has selling power. Otherwise, it's pretty difficult to get a decent price for stuff.

Keep in mind that in most cases, with TalkBass, you will loose about $70 to $100 in shipping and PayPal fee of 2.9%. With eBay, you loose 13%. With Reverb, you loose 8%. With TalkBass you loose shipping and 2.9% (most sell with shipping included in price).

Great time to buy............bad time to sell.

Take good photos, describe it well, put it on as many websites as possible (but indicate a local sale). For a local sale, case is imo optional, you can always take $50 off the price... i price my things at the upper end of fair, and add OBO (or best offer). I'd only take cash and not meet people at my house...

* Your safety and your family's safety is important. Not everyone is a regular person like yourself. There are folks that "need" money for one reason or another and a visit to your house can be a shopping experience. Even if you're not overly concerned about being burglarized, interrupted burglaries with startled and panicked individuals can go very badly.

With your restriction: "Pick up at my house" - this will most likely slow your selling process down. Plus this is an ill-advised move. I respect your privacy for you reason, but you would be wise to come up with a way a meeting your perspective buyer somewhere other than your home.

Your bass would probably fetch anywhere from $600 to $900. I like the color, others would not. Keeping the case would not be a deal breaker for me. Meeting you at your house would, unless it was like $400 or something.

If your scenario is: (1) asking $900, (2) pickup at my house, (3) I would like to keep the case; plan on it taking a while to make a sell. Of course, there could be a local dude looking for a charcoal colored jazz, who does not need or want a case.

Basically, with you restrictions, the odds of a quick sale are not in your favor.

Also, if this helps, UPS, FedEx, etc will come to your house and pick up the bass if you have it boxed up and ready to ship. I think they charge like $5 extra to pick up your package. You might have to set up a free on-line account with them.

I've got lots of thoughts, most contrary to what's already been posted:
  • For some people, such as myself, the lack of a case is a plus. I never use cases and they take up room in my apartment.
  • Shipping in a gig bag is cheaper, and just as safe and easy as in a case if you pack it well.
  • If you can't weigh it, it's not big deal. 99% of the people who ask, "What's the weight," aren't going to buy it anyhow. And they give you the much needed free bumps on the thread.
  • Consider selling on craigslist, as you have lots to gain and little to lose. Selling here you have to add shipping to the cost (could be up to $90 insured), plus paypal fees. Add to that the hassle involved in packing, transporting, describing, posting pix, etc. and you wind up saving a lot. If you knock all that extra money off your price, you'll see it a lot quicker on craigslist, too.
  • Selling here you run the risk of someone not being happy once they get it, which will result in additional hassles, and wasted shipping money... not to mention bad feedback should you come across a maniac :). 98% of the people here are cool, IME, but that 2% is alive and well.
  • Finally, and most importantly, if you like your Jazz bass, think hard before selling it. Fenders are not IME your typical brand of basses. I can't tell you how many I've gone through to find ones I really likes. I spent thousands upon thousands before landing on a P and J that made me happy. The P is an MIA, the J an MIM. Went through a few MIA Js, and only found love in the MIM. That's how much they can vary.
  • And finally, finally... whoever you sell to, whether here or on craigslist, get a phone number, talk with them, and communicate with crystal clarity.
FWIW, I'll only sell here now if desperate. Nothing against talkbass or the people, only the hassles and cost involved. All my sales go through craigslist. And I would never EVER again sell on Ebay. I wouldn't even think about it after reading some recent experiences people had. That guy with the strat got screwed real bad.

[edit] I somehow forgot that you are looking for people to pick it up at the house. That gives all the more reason to go to craigslist. You can ask, but be prepared to wait a while to get a good price, from someone in your area. If you really want to do that, I'd say to ask $700. That'll motivate people to take a drive :).
