This is an interesting bass.

I wanted something like that after hearing this guy play one, Charlie Tumahai, in Bebop Delux.

:)

Loved Charlie. Very underrated. Looks like he subbed a J pickup for the bridge, though. Barry Dunaway, who plays in 38 Special now, has a bass with an SCP and a J, too.

Huge long-time fan here of BBD and Charlie. Helluva bass player. I often post some of his stuff as examples of really funky playing showing up in unexpected places. I give you "Shine":

Chris Squire did that in the late 60's.

Chris Squire's Fender
Anyone ever do this to a P-Bass?
Fender should issue a Chris Squire Signature model

You can see it in this video (@ 0:39), although I don't think it was used in the recording.
It can also be seen in the video for 'Then', played by Tony Kaye.

I think he used it on 'Sweet Dreams', 'Time and a Word' and 'Lucky Seven'.

I faintly remember a builder here on TB who had built several basses configured that way for his own stable - same ‘51 style bodies and double scpb p’ups - with some fancy paint and pinstripes. I can’t remember who it was, though. I can barely remember what I had for breakfast.

1. What bass and what pickups? Does anyone know? Couldn’t find any sort of comment section.

EDIT: Found it. Sig model from a company called Tribe. Apparently they make pickups specially for the guy.

2. Did anyone notice that right before the main beat kicked in, the G string was hanging off the neck like it slipped out of the nut? And then it was magically fixed? The wonderful world of editing.

Killer players both.
I did notice that! I was wondering if it broke!

Love the groove and sound he’s getting out of it.

But I know a lot of it has a to do with how he plays it. Super efficient plucking technique and a light touch on the fretboard. Classic funk style too. Plenty of spark and sass without ever getting gimmicky. Everything in there is being played for a reason. Most excellent drummer too!

I’m super impressed!!! :thumbsup::thumbsup:

(And I definitely need to start get my butt in gear and start practicing more.)
