I haven't weighed my Gold Star, but a real 5-string bluegrass banjo with bell brass tone ring, etc. can come in at about that much. Strapping on a 4-string elec. bass is relief, by comparison.
Off and on over the years I've thought about picking up the banjo. I've always loved bluegrass, and am a big Bela Fleck fan, for both his bluegrass and Flecktones work. What's a good, inexpensive 5-string to start with?

When I go to any music store, I bring just enough money for the strings that I usually am shopping for. Even so, I ache for a new bass any time I am near so many basses for sale.
Not being a smarty at all...I know you meant blinders, but now I can't get the image of a track full of racehorses with flashing left turn signals out of my head!

In the U.S. those are referred to as Blinders, blinkers are otherwise known as turn signal lights.

Not to hijack the thread, but to answer your question: I recommend the Gold Tone CC-100 with or w/o resonator (with, if you don't mind paying the difference). Great build, playability, tone. Banjo.com and Janet Davis Music sell them. Be sure to have HO scale railroad spikes installed on the 5th string at the 7th, 9th & 10th frets. You can opt for planetary tuners if you want—I recommend them. I've had mine since c.2002 with guitar-style tuners and still love it. Hope this helps.
Nice catch! I've been playing that same bass in a shop once and came close to buying it because i wanted to try out a 6er and that one has the look and feel of a really expensive model with the nice woods and the neck through . . .

I admit, since GC moved into that location 3 miles from my house I've been good. I only come home with strings and other knick knacks. It's pretty simple actually, I pickup my favorite guitar and/or bass just before leaving home. When I get there nothing comes across as better so I go home empty handed.

The good thing is that despite there being two GC's close to me neither of them ever carries anything out of the ordinary boring J and P basses in boring colors (red, black, 3TSB, rinse, repeat), except the odd Epiphone T-bird or Gretsch hollow-body. The basses that itnerest me, like the new USA Jaguar for example, never seem to be there. The bad thing is that they always have cool pedals....
