This Lollar P Pickup is worth it

Leaving this here for any googler that needs it.

For anyone out there wondering whether or not to replace your Player Series P bass pickup… this Lollar sounds incredible. You will 100% notice a difference.

To my ears, this bass now sounds better than any of the 2020s MIA fender P’s I’ve tired.

P.S. The standard wind Lollar reports the natural sound of the bass with good clarity. So do make sure bass is set up well, because you will hear everything.

i've eyed that lollar split-coil for a good long time but i've just never acted (i bought others instead). glad you're happy with it!

if you get time and think about it: a sound demo could be useful. but whatever you do, enjoy the difference!

Man… if I just sold my interface, otherwise I would.

thanks, that's a good shootout. i hear a bigger difference between them when flats were strung, and i thought the lollar just shined! very cool.

I don’t know about y’all but I LIKE the stock Player pickups that came with my 2018 MIM P. Only reason I swapped it out was because at the time the PV63s were super cheap so I grabbed a pair

I replaced my Fender Custom Shop pickup with the Lollar P. I first heard it in a Nash PB57 and fell in love with the tone. If the Nash didn't have a baseball bat neck, I would have kept it. But I really dig the feel of my FCS. The Lollar P pickup just rounds it out. My favorite precision pickup.

Yes my thoughts exactly… I actually like the player series modern C way better than the Nash neck. Also this way I saved a lot of cash

Ok I am curious anyone else experienced this but the 2018 player series basses I’ve played have been a bit better than the most recent ones… did COVID play a factor in the quality control perhaps?

I actually do like those pickups a lot. But the lollar has more clarity and less woof. I am not necessarily looking to add any more low end to a P bass. But if you are looking for that sound those are cool pups

I'm afraid I do. Great feeling basses, but the pickups are not what I want in Fender pickups.

I am considering changing the pickup on my Player P and have been listening to a lot of demos the past few days. This Lollar was top on my list...until I heard some demos of the Aguilar 4P-60. To me, the 4P-60 had a bloomy quality which I really liked, and it became my top choice. This thread inspired me to go back and listen to demos of the Lollar again .

The Aguilars were my second choice behind the Lollar. Lollars won by a nose. But I’m sure you can’t go wrong with the Agulairs.

Either way… I highly recommend going for the upgrade

Got to play around with the Lollars more in rehearsal tonight.

A couple things stood out…

1. They take EQ very, very well.

When I would boost the upper mids on my Player Series pickup, it would sound pretty nasally (not in a cool P bass way, but in an obnoxious way). But with the Lollars have a rich, clear sound throughout the register. So you have access to way more tone shaping with good fidelity.

2. Every hand position sounds good

The player series pickup had a smaller range where you could play and keep clarity. But the Lollar picks up all the goodness from the neck to the bridge. Very cool.
