So the guy destroyed the resale value of an expensive Ric and modded it to be yet another PJ. Big deal. It’s his bass. And Rickenbacker will always be building more basses anyway.

T’were me I would have just sold the Ric, bought a real nice PB, and (most likely) pocketed some extra cash.

But that’s me. Maybe he has sentimental attachments to his Ric. Maybe he likes the feel of the neck, or the optics better than what he’d get with a Fender style bass - but he still wants a different sound. Whatever. His bass - His call.

FWIW I don’t think anybody really “hates” PBs. Hate is too strong and exhausting an emotion to waste on something as inconsequential as a bass guitar. “Dislike,” “don’t care for,” “wouldn’t own,” or “not my thing?” You betcha! But hate? C’mon. Life’s too short as it is.

BTW, I’ve seen similar reactions from some PBass players when they see a picture of a PB modded to take a humbucker. Although few of them seem to have the same issue with Berry Oakley’s PB or Billy Sheehan’s “The Wife” bass.

We bass players are odd ducks. Go figure.

Not a fan personally. Between both pickups, it is the tone of the mini-humbucker near the neck that I prefer.

Cliff Burton had a Dimarzio J in the bridge pickup and an EBO mudbucker in the neck of his Ric but his tone was far from a traditional Ric tone. Also, Lemmy had Thunderbird pickups in one of his Rics too. Again, not the typical Ric tones like Geddy Lee or Chris Squire.
