"This vs. That" bass threads

I think comparison/contrast threads are fine as long as they stay reasonably objective and non-pejorative. There are lots of beginner to intermediate bassists who have picked out two basses within their budget at a local store and want to know the advantages and disadvantages of each before making a final decision.

Now that I'm an old phart with a steady income, it ain't such a big deal if I try something and don't like it... easy enough to sell it and use one of my other basses. But a beginner spending all his disposable income on a one-and-only bass... much different story.

Sometimes the beginner asks "which one's better?" (so many people these days want simple answers to complex questions), but the true question is "what are the differences?"

Point taken. One thing about "political correctness"; it's put a muzzle on expression. It's like using the word S**t to describe excrement and still getting in trouble for it, even though that's what it means! :rolleyes: Can't do it anymore.

Oh! By the way; back to the subject; maybe we should concentrate a thread on "guitarists vs drummers; which are "best" to work with?" Gets us away from basses for a while.... :D :D :D

To me, there are two types of "vs" threads. The first one are guys that have actual questions about what may fit them best (to which the correct answer is always.., TRY EM OUT YOURSELF and see),
and those which are analagous to "See how big my johnson is?"
where the poster wants everyone to tell him his new or proposed new Warwank kicks everything else's butt. I don't mind the first type, although I must admit I usually skip the threads. The second kind I almost always read and make a smart ass comment. I can't help it.

Nope...haven't really read any of those. I guess if I had to point my finger at any particular XvsY thread that inspired me to start this thread it would be the Sadowsky Metro vs Lakland Skyline thread.

Two different price points = Apples vs Oranges

Now a much more apples to apples thread (to me) is the Lull vs Sadowsky thread.

That make sense?

I wouldn't pay that kind of cash for a peice of food unless there was a clearly visible image of the virgin Mary on it. Or maybe Elvis.

I'll admit, I'm one of the first to get annoyed and respond with a "Do a search", but I try to be as nice as I can about it. The only thing that bugs me more is the fact that for those of us who WANT people to use the search function, we don't always seem to be encouraging it. I responded with a "do a search" comment to the Ibanez BTB vs. SRS or whatever it was, thread the other day. Instead of others backing it that up and telling the kid that it's been covered and to atleast point him in the direction of that's that might help, they start a new discussion. This to me makes a newbie not bother to use the search function because they know we'll just answer their question anyway.

I know that if it's annoying we don't have to respond at all, either with a response to help the person or a "do a search" comment, but it would be nice to keep the clutter down.
