"This vs. That" bass threads

I agree with the above. What irks me however are some of the replies to questions, usually made by newbies which, to most of us here, is a question with an obvious answer such as: 'what is the difference between a P and a J' or 'is 5 strings better than 4'.

Often you'll get sarcasm ('Do you know that there is a search function') or a silly comment. It seems some of us have forgotton what it is to be 14, just starting on bass with no knowledge of the bass world.

It is easy to point someone in the right direction politely and without being nasty. Makes TB a much friendlier community (although it is really nice already )

I agree here! I get miffed the most when people compare or bash a pro bassist on his gear,style,look and if he makes a mistake or two. We all enjoy diffrent types of music and the styles of bass playing reflect the music the artist plays. I like Korn for being different and with out the slap happy fieldy clicking away it would be weaker. Put Geddy in the band and HUH??? it wont work it is a style that works with korn's music. But there has been threads on how bad Fieldy is and what a goon he is? Alot of the guys posting negitive comments would be a slappin fool like him if feildy left the band and they were called in to replace him! Tech questions thoughts on mods and gear and reviews are why i come here not to bash anybody or their equipment choices or music styles. And its so true the hot chick eyeing you as you play your fill has no idea or care if you play an SX or a Sadowsky...if your jammin shes diggin it...who cares... and nobody but another critic bassist in the crowd will notice or care about your tone or that you have a Behringer head and not a Ampeg...but give em time and they will post that you had a behringer head on this site and think your the less for it . Play people and quit playin on each other and our choices and styles

Personally, I've never tried either one, but the apple has glossier ads and my favorite famous eaters and jugglers all eat it, so I'll have to go with it.
Just make sure you try it out in the store before you buy it.

And it's very important to make sure that when you try it out, you make sure it has fresh batteries, the skin of your choice, and is set up to your liking by your local grocer. If the stem is missing, that's something you have to decide if you can live with. Usually you can pick up new stems on Ebay, although the older the apple the harder it may be to locate and they're usually more expensive because of the vintage nature.

This is a topic for another thread, but I personally find it disgusting that someone would pay over $10,000 for an apple on Ebay just because it's supposed to be the one that hit Isaac Newton on the head.

noone in the vs threads seem to accecpt that there may be things outside their own sphere of experiance

i drive a really old camper van (not a VW ), half the mechanics i take it to say "you dont often see those around in this good a condition, thats incredible" and the other half say "Its a death trap, its going to die within a year, why dont you get yourself a caravan?"

every bass ive ever owned has been the "best thing ever and im never going to need another" and basses more expensive than said current bass are "a waste of money, why would i need that"...

is a long journey and everyones at different stages but noone should be ignorant and thats the feeling i get on a lot of the vs threads, yeah, i think we read them when we're new to the forum then we learn to ignore them

Even though I might come across as an irreverent wiseguy at times, when it comes to newbies asking questions, I always try to be helpful and I'm always respectful.
Didn't somebody once say "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"? To me, that describes the people who trash someone's style or insist on ranking musicians or instruments. When you're just starting out, you're innocent. When you've been playing (or just plain living) a long time, you understand that there's always more for you to learn. (Like, now I know that the 12-year-old kid next door playing bass with a pick is better than Jaco in that area, because Jaco never used a pick! Therefore, I now know that there can never be one "greatest" bassist. And Fieldy is playing music that expresses himself, not competing for an Olympic Gold Medal or something.) But in between the newbies and the elders you have some people who have just been playing a short while and think they have it all figured out. They don't know how much they don't know. (Hmmm... I sound like Donald Rumsfeld.) I was that way when I was twenty, and I *know* I was insufferable.
So I guess I'm saying that while some of the "comparison" questions amuse me, I would never slap down a newbie looking for help.

The aggressive "shoot-out" attitude bugs me, and the "apples vs. oranges" questions and unanswerable questions ("which would I enjoy playing better, this or that") amuse me, but the ones that really kill me are the ones so down into the minutiae level that I just want to say, "Get a life!!"

I've found that the vs threads that actually have merit are those comparing basses because someone is trying to make a decision about what to use. Lots of info there to help everyone out, as long as the feedback on it is legit and sticks to the subject.

IMHO, the ones that just want to show that "my bass can beat up your bass", just waste people's time with conflict, ego and (sometimes) stupidity. It's the ego thing that really gets in the way, even more than the stupidity. Even though someone's asking for a comparison, they're actually looking for confimation from the bass community that the bass they love is the best! Sometimes ends up an eye opener for the "poster".

I understand your point, and the pic's got a humorous touch, but be careful. My nephew did special olympics and I'm not too keen on him, (or any of the other kids doing their best), being called "********". Pretty outdated term, and lands in the trash heap of racist slurs that needn't be used anymore.

Most people doing the comparisons dont' realize that alot of the time the basses they want compared are so far apart that it's not worth comparing.

"Hey guys, what should I get? A 4-string Jazz, or a 12-string Hamer?"

Not inspired by any one particular thread just X vs Y threads in general...nothing new though really when I think about it.
