Double Bass Thomastic Spirocore, from birth to death.

Will do, I'm going into my last week of my college semester and the strings are being delivered to my house, so within a week I'll be able to share the results.
Yesterday....for the first time in 12 years.... I ordered the same set of strings that are already on my bass. Spirocore Medium E, Spiro Weichs for the A, D and G.
I don't really need to replace the old ones yet. They have been on for more than 18 months but the Canadian buck is within a nickel of parity with the US buck so I thought it was a good time to buy.....and also head off any thoughts I may have in the New Year of trying something else yet again.
This combination has been trouble free, they sound great on my bass and they have the perfect tension and feel for me.
The Orch E/Weich combination has ended 12 years of expensive string experimenting. So while I was not with them at birth....I am now a geezer so it looks like I will be with them until death.
How's that for commitment?

I recently put a mittel E on with solo A D G. I didnt think it would work too well, but surprisingly the mittel seems easier to bow than the weich. Its more mellow and maybe the extra tension is helping somehow.
The weich had a bit more sustain, but overall functionality seems to be better with the mittel.

Let me take this opportunity to say this works well with Obligato, too, so I wonder what else... D'Addario...
I have tried Spirocore mittle, but what I bought was the weich, so I'll get to see soon enough. You get the nice balance going heavier with lower strings, but everything starts from that lighter point. Wow, anticipation...

Solos sound darker to me than the Mittel or Weich gauges. They aren't near as low tension as you would think. In fact, they feel almost like the Helicore Hybrid(medium) that I had on my Hofner before. Easier to bow as well...
I'm gonna get my feet wet w/ the solos by trying just a solo G along (w/ Mittel E/A/D that are already on there) I'm picking up in a trade. Been curious about them for a while.

I don't know about you guys, but I have never had any corrosion on Spirocores even if they have been sitting around for years. They seem to last forever. Helicores on the other hand....
I just put Weich E and A on my bass, and I have to say, they really do sound nice. You can set them up a little higher than Mittels and they tend to get that "bounce".

I wouldn't have any issues with yer crust there. I figure if I put them on my bass I'll sound just like that arco shiz in yer post. Save me years of practice for mere postage.

I just swapped my solo G over to my old weich G and it seems to work better for arco. Tiny bit more volume, more focused fundamental note, slightly less bright and steel sounding. I would like the extra bit of brightness back, but what can you do. Pizzicato is mostly the same, again slightly less bright, more oomph to the attack of the note.
I think it has to do with string height/tension. If you like your strings low, you may lose too much energy with a solo G, but if you like your string medium or higher, a solo G may be a good lower tension alternative to a weich.
Oh, and is there some kind of patch I can stick to my arm which reduces the cravings to change my ****ing strings all the time?

Try folding up the receipts for the all the strings you bought before you settled on the Spiro's..and use as a patch.
That should cure you!

Heh, well luckily I think Im back in love with the weichs. Just the G at the moment. Ill swap them all when I have my new tailpiece.
I have a marvin wire tp coming in the mail any time now, so Im excited to see how a broken in set of weichs sound, with a mittel E.
A nice worn in mittel E makes a fantastic arco string.
Plus I tried another experiment, I tuned the solos up to their intended solo tuning, and damn, these strings make a killer arco string when theyre up to tension.
Its almost worth relearning the FB to play the solos in orchestral pitch.

I had them on my Kay years ago for a pretty short time.. I remember liking them, but I don't remember what I used after that.. probably right back to guts. The string height w/ the Spiros is by no means low.. I'd say they're on the higher side of medium. I'm a long time gut user on my Kay (Mittels are on the Lang), so I guess it's hard to break out of that higher string height stuff. Though as I'm doing some more soloistic stuff they might have to some down a hair, but hopefully not too much. Man, I remember a stand partner that had Weichs and his action was really, really low.. don't know how he did it.
I just remember reading on here someone saying the solos are a bit darker sounding (for Spiros, at least) and that they're not quite as low tension as one might think. And yes, it's different on every bass, so I'll just give it a try and see if it works or not.
