I love the big clover tuners & the Fender headstock - the tuners are like functional bass jewelry. I have been fantasizing about casting some custom big ginko leaf tuners for one of my basses. One of many projects I hope to get to in this life time.

The bigger the key, the longer the lever arm. The longer the lever arm, the less force it takes from your fingers. The less force it takes, the easier it is to turn it in small increments.

As has been mentioned before, not all Fenders are "regular" J-Basses or P-Basses and therefore there are different types of tuners being used. One further example for that - the unlucky Dimension bass ... it has big "ears" but small and lightweight mechanics on the back.

I love the big tuners. In fact, I prefer the older 60s and 70s tuners to the newer ones visually.

2014 Fender American Deluxe Precision

2014 Fender American Limited Precision Sandblasted, based on American Standard

Though both are big, the Deluxe tuning keys are more precise because I believe they have more teeth than the tuning keys on the limited. If I am wrong on that, then there is something else, because as you turn them there is definitely less movement on the string post on the headstock on the Deluxe than on the Limited.

I’m happy, and not just because they turn smoothly and evenly. While not billed as lightweight, these GB707s cured what neck dive I had (not terrible, but certainly don’t miss it!), and I think they match the overall look of a pointy instrument better. Thanks again for highlighting them, @JIO.
