Those sweet JBL K140's

D140 in the 60s,then K140, and E140, but I'm not sure of the order or time of the last two.

I had one of the Kustom 200 and 2x15 D140 cabs back in '65-'66. It really needed two cabs to increase the volume for some gigs.

Ended up going with a Sunn 2000s/2x15 Sunn D140 cab. Sunn cab moved more air and seemed to be more efficient.

Both sounded great! First with '63 Hofner and then '64 Fender Jazz.

Thats the sound that made me want to play bass way back then. Now I have GAS to get my Kustom 200 3-15 metalflake blue rig back.

It's funny how everybody here is down on the old Kustom stuff until you post an actual track....

(OBTW, the GAS went away quick when I remember how much that baby weighed...):hmm:
I'll admit I'm one of them. I thought my chorus director's Kustom rig was pretty cool till he got an Acoustic 370/301. But to be fair, I don't think his had JBL's. But yeah, these recordings did sound quite good, didn't they?

I never had the two 215 rig, and, honestly, never cared for the stock speakers that came with the Kustoms. The JBL's made quite a difference, imho, right off the bat. Just a very, sweet tone, up and down the neck, and perfect for an RnB, Soul/Horn band. Don't think it would quite cut it if you were in a metal band ! :D

This rig was "born" with D140F's, but it's currently loaded with K140's.

Different sounding than the Kustom rig, but the JBL's shine in this set up too.

Nice cuts jnewmark, nice playing and I think you nailed the tone for the genre. Your bass is sitting right where it needs to be in the mix IMO.

Those old JBL just sound "musical".

Wow, that rig looks brand new ! Very cool. Thanks for the kind words. Those songs are two of my favorite Soul tunes, and I never get tired of playing them. I wish I could have posted a cut called " Cardiac Party " . It's an old Jack Mack and the Heart Attack song, and those old JBL K140's really sing as I was digging in a little harder than usual. But the file was too big to upload here; it's a little over 4 minutes long.

not to state the obvious but that is an absolutely stunning rig!

Agreed, and edbass is posting this photo on any thread he can! Inciting envy.....

jnewmark, I dig the recordings and the rig. Nice fat r&b bass. But I can't believe we aren't debating how/whether the tuck-and-roll affects the tone. :hiding:

Shhh, the SPL and WinIsd police will be here any minute to tell how it's one of the worst rigs ever ! :hiding::hiding:
