Thoughts on gear with no Warranty?

Looking at bass heads and Ebay has a few sellers selling name brands but they say because they are not authorized dealers they cannot offer any warranty. The Prices are 200 to 300 dollars less then with the big name web stores.

Asking them if it's B stock they say no just that they cannot offer a warranty. Since I am also considering buying used is there any concern with the new vs. no warranty?

Or would it be better to get a used but proven unit if you are not getting any warranty?

If you want a warranty, buy the head then go to Square Trade online for a warranty.

This has never stopped me from buying a head, although I usually buy used so it's moot anyway.

If a piece of gear take a crap within a typical warranty period, it's unreliable. The manufacturer may fix it but I have no interest in owning it.

Not true. There is always a % of manufactured goods that will experience problems. That's the nature of mass manufacturing. I am not a lucky person and I always seem to get those units.

Not true...FOR YOU! I've never needed warranty repair for any piece of music gear I've owned.

I myself am leery of used electronics, and am going to be looking at amps myself shortly, but I already know what I want (GK RB-400), and will get it on interest free payments at Sweetwater.

I don't buy high-ticket used electronics unless the manufacturer has a long-standing reputation for reliability. I've bought select used Gallien-Krueger heads that have served me very well.

You don't get the warranty from the place you bought it anyway. You get warranty repair from the authorized service center. They will check your receipt & make sure it's within warranty range.

I just had it happen to me today. The guy fixing my amp called to tell me to come get my intermittently faulty amp & said it's not under warranty. I told him about the receipt I left for him in the amp's bag pocket.

After reviewing that, he said he will call the manufacturer tonight.

If I am buying with no warranty that means I am buying used. I have no issues buying used but I do have issues paying 80-90% of retail for a used amp

Good pricing for used is half or less. Most of the big box stores drop off retail by only 33%.

Actually there is a local store that gives you a short warranty on used gear (I think it's 90 days)
I've bought used stuff from them, never needed to use it.

Every manufacturer has a percentage of Early Life Failure, doesn't necessarily make them bad.

All my gear comes off EBay. Some new, some used. I've never needed a warranty.

To the OP I have no problem with it.. Over the past 15 years I have bought 9 amps in total.. 4 I still have and only 3 were new.. and the two that I still own are still working fine.. I have needed warranty repair on one of those amps.. and it was an amp I bought used but was still under warranty and that warranty was honored based on the QC sticker inside the amp because I had no receipt.. the repair was minor and Agedhorse was GREAT about it... .

I recently bought a used GK 700RB-ii that was "pulled from a working environment", but had no warranty. It was about $50-75 cheaper than the used ones at GC so I jumped on it. Well, it's at GK now and after $50 shipping and $155 for the repair (dry filter caps and re-solder input jacks) I'll have my amp back. Not 100% sure who pays return shipping, but assuming it's me I will have paid more than $100 more than I would have at GC. Granted, this is now serviced by the manufacturer and has a 1 year warranty on the recent parts/service, but GC would have taken back my gear if I bought it from them.

So, if you see it's a dealer on eBay with great feedback and some sort of return policy it might be worth a shot. Personally, I won't buy equipment online without some sort of warranty on it again, even if it has a return policy.

Forget the warranty, I'd be more concerned about them not being an Authorized Dealer. If the gear is indeed new, how did they get it?! Maybe someone in the know will chime in, but all I can think of is: It's either hot, or they buy out closing stores' inventories.
